The aim of this study is both to inquire into whether the various mental images of children's verses contained in elementary Korean Language textbooks are presented in accord with a matter of children's interests or concerns and to search for the teaching methods matching them. First, the images play an important role in understanding verses but the analysis about criteria for selecting verse images, types of images, and the methods of expressing images contained in the textbooks seems not to be sufficient in the earlier studies. Thus, this study intends to analyze mental images of verses contained in the textbooks based on "the 2009's revised curriculum" so that the basis of mental image centered poetry instruction can be identified. Second, according to verbal, emotional and cognitive developmental stages, the teaching contents for elementary students have to be connected to work mutually and systematized from simple to complex, concrete to abstract, and external access to internal access. Accordingly, the works composed of mental images based on experiences must appropriate to present to elementary students. In that sense, this study intends to encourage students to cultivate their positive attitude to understanding poems. Third, until now, the poems contained in textbooks have not been oriented to mental images. But to understand poems and acquire poetic feeling, the language of poetry expressed as an image has to be understood. Therefore, the image teaching about poems in elementary school should be carried out mainly in the center of mental images. In this regard, this study aims to provide or will provide the model for choosing poems for textbooks centering around mental images. Fourth, this study is to teach poems effectively by preparing the teaching-learning methods centering around mental images for poetry learners to create their own poetic feeling after reading poems. The contents discussed for achieving the aim of this study are as follows. In chapter II, the necessity of mental image centered teaching is examined in relation to the importance of mental experience and children's developmental stages. By inquiring into the aspects of mental image in poems presented in elementary school textbooks, particularly language learning activities, this study analyzes the distribution of images by grades exploring whether mental image centered teaching is possible when it is carried out with poems contained in the textbook based on "the 2009's revised curriculum". In chapter III, the effective poems teaching program based on mental images is presented. In chapter IV, after applying this method to 6th grade student in real teaching-learning situation and observing the attitude of appreciating poetry and the learners' cognitive changes to teaching poems, whether the program for teaching poems proposed in this study is effective or not is discussed. The conclusion and suggestion of this study being discussed in chapter V is as follows. At first, the necessity of teaching poems centering around mental images as well as the importance of understanding mental images in appreciating poetry in elementary school is raised. It is shown that through analysis of textbook by grades, most poems included mental images and that while connecting children's developmental stages with traits of mental images, the approaching poems through mental images was known to be very important to elementary students. Second, the method of teaching poems centering around mental images made learners feel interests and approach poems far more easily. Applying the point that mental images are based on mental experience that learners get directly, allowed students to understand poems written with meaningful words easily through mental images. At the same time, by providing activities for understanding mental images through learners' experiences, students gained interest about poems and provide basis to have continually interest in them. Third, this method of having students think about poems from various angles through teaching activities centering around mental images could improve their thinking and imagination. It also provide students with chances to give full expression to their thinking and imaginative faculty through activities creating poems by making mental images based on their own feelings and emotions from reading poems. Besides, learners could recognize the importance of mental images in poems and understand the meaningful words of poems easily through mental images. This study applies mental images in teaching poems in elementary schools, which has been out of the question until now, to real learning situations. This study is significant in terms of proposing activities that can be used in real learning situations by structuring mental images centered poetry learning procedure based on stages like "to understand, to interpret, or to be self-satisfied.
