The purpose of this research was to propose an integrated plan to prevent soldiers from committing suicide. To achieve such purpose, this research suggested a plan for enhancement of the present camp system, supplement of specialized counselors as well as connection to social institutions in consideration of causes of suicide with regard to theoretical background. Suicide rate in OECD countries was decreased by 20% on average from 1990 to 2006, but it was increased by 172% in Korea, which well demonstrates the seriousness of suicide and some even call Korea the republic of suicide. Such influence of suicide is no exception in the military. Korean men have to serve military duty. In this process, many young men feel the urge to commit suicide, and some of them put it into practice, which evokes both sympathy and concern. As the researcher had served as a specialized military life consultant in the barrack for three years, she learned of soldiers feeling the urge to commit suicide or those who have attempted to commit suicide. The research also learned that the soldiers who have thought of suicide might attempt to kill themselves or still have the urge to commit suicide with little time left in the service under the special organization system of the military. As these young Korean men are the future, the dream, the hope and the treasure of the nation, so not only the military, but the whole society needs to make efforts to prevent soldiers from committing suicide. In particular, Korea as a nation is responsible for keeping young men who fulfill their duty in the military from killing themselves, and needs to develop interest in systematically managing those discharged from the military in many ways so that their suicide can be prevented. With regard to research on causes of suicide among soldiers and methods of management, soldiers’ suicide cannot be handled in the narrow sense confined to the military. Various social institutions need to collaborate with each another, carry out integrated control while helping the military overcome limited resources. The study made following suggestions. First, personality tests need to be strengthened. A physical examination conducted by Military Manpower Administration needs to include more psychiatrists, and more efforts need to be made to enlist healthy men through designated hospitals. Second, the Public Service Regulations need to be improved. Continuous efforts need to be made to help new-generation soldiers well adapt to special military circumstances. These soldiers, who grew up freely expressing their feelings and opinions, need a forum for communication through various means. Third, participation of psychiatrists need to be encouraged. Since suicide is closely related to self-esteem and depression, ordinary counseling has limitations. For this reason, more psychiatrists need to be placed to help soldiers maintain mental health. Fourth, preventive education needs to be expanded through linkage with diversified social institutions. As these soldiers’ suicide goes beyond a problem facing individuals and families but a problem of the society and the country, efforts need to be made to prevent soldiers from committing suicide in cooperation with various social institutions. Fifth, the number of soldiers in each barrack needs to be minimized. Currently, 00 number of soldiers share one barrack in the Korean military. Considering that the main cause of suicide in the military is the senior soldiers’beating in many cases, proactive efforts need to be made to minimize the number of soldiers in a barrack. Sixth, an emphasis needs to be put on educating senior soldiers. To improve the relationship between senior soldiers and junior soldiers, starting with the squad commanders, continuous efforts are required so that the new generation soldiers can adapt to the environment, and the quality and the quantity of education on suicidal symptoms are enhanced. Keywords: suicide, solider, adolescent suicide, counseling, specialized consultant.
