The aim of this research has been to develop a steam plasma torch and a coal gasification to produce electricity. A pure steam plasma torch powered by 2.45 GHz / 915 MHz microwaves can be generated by injecting steam into a discharge tube as swirl gas at a temperature higher than 150 C. The torch can be used in various ways. One example is as hydrogen for fuel cells. The temperature measurement of the torch has two distinct regions: a bright, whitish high temperature plasma zone and a reddish dimmer relatively low-temperature flame. This analysis indicates efficient disintegration of water molecules that can be confirmed by analytical estimates and experimentally measured data. Experiments leading to increased volume and power have produced large electrode-less plasmas by using 915 MHz microwaves from a magnetron. In comparison with 2.45 GHz microwaves, a 915 MHz microwave source creates enlarged plasma based on waveguide. The plasma flames are sustained and stabilized in a discharge tube with an inner diameter of 80 mm by swirl gas flows. The next step has been to investigate coal gasification using pure steam plasma torch. The plasma creates a highly active chemical, enhancing the chemical reaction rate. Brown coal from Indonesia, with ash and moisture content of 38.12 %, was injected into the steam plasma torch with microwave power of 4 kW. During the experiment, the relative concentration of synthetic gases was at a ratio of 1.36 of coal to steam. This meant 48 % of hydrogen, 23 % of carbon monoxide, 25 % of carbon dioxide and 4 % of methane. The increase in the ratio of coal to steam did not reduce carbon dioxide concentration. We also learned that a low-grade coal gasifies well in the steam plasma torch. Then influence of the gas temperature on the gasification of a low-grade coal was studied. A swirl-type gasifier was equipped with two microwave steam plasma torches, and the gas temperature was raised in the reaction chamber of 1145 liters. With the additional heating of the synthetic gas by partial oxidation of the coal, the inner-wall temperature in the gasifier rose from 1200 C to 1700 C. Indonesian brown coal, with calorific value of 4640 kcal/kg and ash and moisture content of 33.17 %, used for gasification and observed in three different temperature zones. The average temperature of the each zone was 1220 C at zone 1, 1480 C at zone 2, and 1650 C at zone 3. Using the same input operation, the gasification performance was seen to be significantly different due to the temperatures. The carbon conversion rate and cold gas efficiency increased dramatically as the inner wall temperature of the gasifier increased from 1200 C to 1650 C. The carbon conversion rate at zone 3, with its average temperature of 1650 C, was nearly 100 %, ensuring a complete gasification of carbons in low-grade coal with high ash content. The cold gas efficiency, η = 0.84 at zone 3, with T = 1650 C is very high in a relatively small gasifier like the experiment used here. The total calorific value of the synthetic gas was 500 kW at zone 3. This study is an investigation of the 1.5 MWth gasification of coal in an atmospheric torch operating at 915 MHz microwave. To do this, we designed and built a compact power plant for our experiment. Fine powdered coal, used in the experiment, was delivered into the torch through a feeder. First, four 915 MHz microwave system sets were mounted on the upper and lower sections of the 1.5 MWth gasifer. Then upper and lower plasma torches were installed so as to be tangential to the cylindrical gasifier sidewall. A swirl flow from the upper to the lower section occurred, generating longer particles than those produced in the gas stream. At a rate of 230 kg/h, coal particles were injected into the plasma torches at a total microwave power of 80 kW. The resulting concentrations of the synthetic gases were: 20.7 % hydrogen, 37.6 % carbon monoxide, and 9.9 % carbon dioxide. Cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion rates were observed to be 78 % and 85.6 % with 1500 C for the average temperature, respectively. This research is important for populations not yet reached by modern technology. These are populations without electricity, and this means without heat, refrigeration, telephones, or TV. We have taken an important step in bringing technology to these areas. We have developed a steam plasma torch that can bring light into the places without electricity.
