The Crack on concrete surface acts as major factor that affect the lifespan of structures, and as such regular inspection and maintenance are required. The sealing is a method of repairing the crack in the beginning. It is effective in preventing additional cracks and expansion that occurs with time. However, sealing of big sized structures is difficult to ensure safety of the workers due to inadequate working environments. For this reason, the necessity of the sealing automation has been emphasized. This study proposes basic and additional control method to apply robot systems to the sealing of crack on concrete surfaces. First, the basic control methods for sealing work surfaces must be performed in order to use robots, and they are subdivided into two steps. In one step, the trajectory of the crack is tracked automatically. The robot identifies the crack trajectory using image data received from the camera. If the previous trajectory information can be used to predict the next point to which the crack moves, real time changes in trajectory information can be processed to track the crack automatically. The second step maintains a desired force to the contact surface in order to perform the sealing. Even on rough surfaces exposed to the external environment for long periods of time, if the robot can maintain a desired contact force, sealing can be completed evenly. Force control using impedance is proposed for maintaining the desired force. Second, the additional control methods for the tracking of the working surface is necessary for the application of robots to various shapes of concrete surfaces. They are subdivided into two steps. In one step, the surface slope is estimated in real time. The surface slope is calculated in real time using the robot position, and methods for predicting the slope of the next point is proposed in order to prevent the robot from disengaging with the contact surface due to quick slope changes. The second step suggests a way to compensate for the disturbance that occurs when tracking the contact surface. In certain conditions the robot, which performs sealing by estimating the surface slope, fails to execute the correct force, due to multiple factors between the external environment and the system. Such factors as disturbances occurring from tracking the working surface are considered and robust control within the maximum value of the disturbance is proposed. These studies introduce basic control methods for the application of sealing robots and additional control methods for improving their effectiveness, as well as performing lab and field tests using those methods. Finally, field application of robots based on the results of the tests are presented.
