Steel fiber reinforced shotcrete that is currently used in Korea and elsewhere is short steel fiber dispersed in concrete mixture to improve tensile strength, bending strength, and crack resistance, and expensive additive agents such as accelerating agent, superplasticizer, and other admixtures are used in addition to steel fiber. Also, shotcrete using conventional cement has a high risk of rebound, which refers to the material falling off instead of adhering to the surface due to low adhesiveness. Therefore, the construction procedure is repeated twice to three times in order to satisfy the shotcrete specification criteria by ensuring stable thickness of the surface and this results in delaying the construction, using excessive materials, and, thereby, increasing the construction costs. Modified sulfur for shotcrete does not use expensive steel fiber or additives and, instead, uses low-cost modified sulfur discharged as a by-product from refineries, fine powder and fine aggregate. Therefore, it has price competitiveness and, because of the high adhesiveness, fast hardening, and high strength of modified sulfur, it can be placed in the standard thickness just by once or twice of placements in one to three hours. In this study, chemical and physical properties of modified sulfur were analyzed based on difference in the degree of polymerization according to the types, amount, reaction temperature, and time of initiator used for polymerizing modified sulfur. By using both a spray gun for modified sulfur shotcrete specifically designed for this study and casting method, properties, such as the slump, hardening time, strength, and water resistance, of modified sulfur mortar containing fine aggregate were compared to those of conventional steel fiber shotcrete. The result was as follows: 1. When modified sulfur for shotcrete was polymerized by using morpholine and Trans-cinnamaldehyde as initiators, in the SEM fine structure analysis, the network structure was different from that of conventional modified sulfur and the fine structure characteristics enabled making modified sulfur for shotcrete with improved adhesion and strength. 2. In the test of modified sulfur mortar for shotcrete, when it hardened fast within one to three hours, the material had much stronger properties such as compressive strength, bending strength, bond strength, rebound rate, and water resistance than those of conventional steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. 3. In the test conducted with the spray designed for this study, the properties of the proposed material showed better results than the existing shotcrete KS standard.
