ABSTRACT This study tried to review the characteristics of Rhizome which appears in physical theatre through the thinking called Rhizome of Gilles Deleuze and then exemplify it through representative works from domestic and overseas. The meaning of Rhizome here is a system being open to everything and it can have various contacts and it refers to changes in the relationship with others, not to be fixed. Through the discussion on such Rhizome, the physical theatre which appears around a body as new diverse methods in today’s performing arts is to be recognized and the various meanings that the body has is to be analyzed. Prior to the discussion, a new wave of physical theatre can be highlighted in the performing arts of the future by learning about the concept of physical theatre and reviewing the common features of the works which have been called as a physical theatre. Also, the fact that a modern society has been looked as decentralized manifold through the principle of connection, asignified rupture and cartography among organizing principles of Rhizome took attention and three characteristics of Rhizome, scalability of body, connectivity of body and reproducibility of body were drawn by applying to the key characteristics of physical theatre. And the analysis was done on how three characteristics of Rhizome are being represented through the analysis of the works such as 「Woyzeck」 by Sadari Movement Lab in South Korea and 「the cost of living」 by DV8 and 「Blush」 by Ultima Vez in other countries which are representative physical theatres of national and international organizations. The scalability of body that commonly appears in three works can be considered as an new connected academic approach beyond the convergence where different genres meet around the body and the connectivity of body can be understood as the connection of emotion where individual feelings can be blended and reborn into a new energy beyond that the body meets the body. Lastly, the reproducibility of body could be interpreted as the body changing into an object in the space of the stage plays a new role. Also, Although 「the cost of living」by DV8 and 「Blush」 by Ultima Vez are the works produced by reorganizing live performances in the form of ‘dance film’, there’s no particular restriction no matter it is outdoor or video, not the stage in the place as the director wanted to express something new and reorganize. The discussion on the characteristics of Rhizome shown in physical theatre through three works gives a glimpse that the body begins to rise as important in the flow of today’s fast changing performing arts and there’s a will that wants to be back to the most primitive and essential body that have been forgotten for a while. It is the physical theatre that makes numerous human relationships dramatic through body movements and people looking at it feel empathy as it keeps open to the possibility of multiple interpretations by individuals. As the body cannot be described as one definition and art and life are not completely different, the direction that performing arts has to go in the future was presented through a new perspective of humanistic point by looking at the body through the characteristics of the body. This study has provided the opportunity to broaden the humanistic foundation of performing arts by applying the philosophical thinking of Deleuze to the physical theatre and it has its meaning in the fact that it brought actual works in, not just staying on the academic level and then analyzed them in the characteristics of Rhizome. And while the discussion on the characteristics of Rhizome in the physical theatre is still not enough, it’s expected that it can be presented in a new perspective in the forming arts of the future.
