Processes used for welding stainless steel include electric welding, GTAW, GMAW, Laser Welding and plasma welding. Electric welding and GTAW welding processes are the commonly used welding processes because of its good workability despite its slow welding speed. Laser welding and plasma welding on the other hand, though have good welding speed and operation, the high cost of equipment and facilities limits its use. Thus, making GMAW and GTAW welding processes still the mainly used processes in the field of stainless steel welding. In this study, each of the optimal process parameters and test base predicted surface using a statistical technique of Taguchi Experiments were carried out in GMAW and GTAW welding surfacing. Considering the necessary factors and levels in Taguchi and Latin square design of experiments using orthogonal arrays, the experiment was conducted in 16 conditions. Following Taguchi optimal development of the process design, four process parameters that could affect the weld quality was varied in the experimental design: voltage, pre-heating temperature, post heating temperature. For each level of factor, experiment was conducted to establish a four-level array. For GMAW, each level of the process parameters include: 120, 140, 160, 180A for the current; 12, 14, 16, 18 V for the voltage; 20, 100, 200, 300℃ for the preheating temperature; and 20, 100, 200 and 300℃ for the post heating temperature. A surfacing was set and was subjected to three times each according to the welding conditions set in the 16 orthogonal array to prepare a test piece. On the other hand, for GTAW, each level of the process parameters include: 90, 95, 100, 105 A for the current; 12, 14, 16, 18 V for the voltage; 20, 100, 200, 300℃ for the preheating temperature; and 20, 100, 200 and 300℃ for the post heating temperature. The experiment was conducted in order to produce a smooth test jig with the GMAW and GTAW torch fits. Experimental base fillers metal used is of the same material, STS 316L Stellite # 6. Optimum level for the GMAW resulted to 4-level for the current (A), 3-level for the voltage (V), 4-level for the pre-heating temperature (℃), and 1 level for the post heating temperature (℃). Meanwhile for the GMAW, optimum level resulted to 4-level for the current (A), 4-level for the voltage (V), 4-level for the pre-heating temperature (℃), and two levels for the post heating temperature (℃). Current and voltage were found to be of higher contribution on the development of the process design in GMAW welding than pre-heating temperature and post heating temperature. Similarly, in welding development for GTAW, current was found to have the highest contribution as well. The GMAW and GTAW showed an average micro-hardness value of Hv460.00 and Hv427.33, respectively. The weld surface of the test piece using the developed GMAW welding process on the average showed about 7.65% higher micro-hardness value compared to that of the developed GTAW welding process. Through the comparison of the two experimental processes using statistical techniques of the Taguchi Experiment, it was confirmed that in terms of productivity, surface micro-hardness, operating speed and efficiency, GMAW welding process is better than GTAW. Furthermore, it was confirmed that process optimization by applying the response variable for the hardness measurement value in practicing the Surface Coating welding can bring economic benefits in terms of quality.
