The purpose of this study was to examine the career decision-making process of college students in the region of Busan and the types of their career decision-making process in an effort to develop a substantial theory geared toward explaining the conditions and results of career decision-making process. Strauss and Corbin(1998)s grounded theory that was based on the perspective of a symbolic interaction theory was applied to achieve the purpose of the study. The subjects in this study were the selected college students in the area of Busan, who spent two years or more in college. Two research questions were posed: 1. What experiences do the college students in the area of Busan gain during career decision-making process? 2. What are their career decision-making process and the types of their career decision-making process? As a result of carrying out open coding, 108 concepts were selected, and 56 subcategories were selected, which were abstracted into 22 categories. Axial coding was conducted to convert the categories into a paradigm model. The central phenomenon of the career decision-making process of the college students in Busan was having a vague notion of their own career. The causal condition was choosing a college without considering career. The contextual conditions that brought about phenomena were being interested in joyful college life, facing difficulties in college adjustment, having a feeling of liberation and experiencing the negative influence of environments. The mediation conditions were seeking advice and being in trouble about career. The action, interaction strategies that were used to regulate these phenomena were facing up to reality, being thrown into confusion due to unexpected reality, accepting reality, defining ones own career path, trying to be positive, gaining necessary experience and making preparations for certification exams, failing to carry out the career plan, feeling the gap between planning and acting out, learning how to cope with failure, and growing internally. The results were making a realistic compromise about career, taking a more active attitude, managing oneself, and being impatient. The career decision-making process of the college students in Busan was classified into five stages: being vague about the future, facing up to reality, recognizing reality, accepting reality, and compromising with reality. When selective coding was conducted, the core category was keeping oneself grounded in reality instead of unconditionally pursuing a dream. As a result of analyzing the relationship of the categories that continued to appear including the core category, reality-compliant type, activist type, planning-centered type and onlooker type were identified as the types of cultural identity development. Those who are of reality-compliant type adapt themselves well to the given situations but dont take a positive attitude to career decision making as they are easily affected by others or just follow others instead of being motivated to do something on their own. Those who are of activist type actively engage in career decision making. They are active, positive and do something after thinking of it a lot. Those who are of planning-centered type spare no efforts to get lots of information, but they dont actually carry out their plans. Those who are of onlooker type think of their own career as if it was a matter of someone else. They belong to this type because they experience a setback in their career or are in conflicts. In conclusion, this study found how the college students in the region of Busan experienced their own career decision-making process and how they guided their own career in the right direction by keeping themselves grounded in reality instead of recklessly pursuing their dreams.
