The electrolyte solutions with and without the additives were prepared by dissolving vanadyl sulfate in sulfuric acid solutions. Charge- discharge tests in the unit cell were carried out. The electrolyte solutions with and without additives were characterized by UV-Vis, ESR 51V-NMR, FT-IR, Raman and 1H-NMR. Thermochromic VO2 powders were prepared using V2O5 which was recovered from the waste electrolyte solutions. Discharge capacities of vanadium flow redox battery with the electrolyte solution with and without 3 wt% polyethylene glycol decreased by 33% and 69.5%, respectively. The results of UV-Vis and ESR analysis exhibited the presence of both V4+ and V5+ in the electrolyte solutions of C100 and CP100. The ratio of V4+/V5+ in the electrolyte solution of CP100 was higher than that in the electrolyte solution of C100. The results of 51V-NMR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy exhibited the presence of V5+-monomer, V5+-dimer and V5+-sulfate-complex in the electrolyte solutions of C0C, C100C and CP100C. The proportion of V5+-dimer was very high than that of V5+-sulfate-complex in the electrolyte solution of CP100C. The spectral analysis of 51V-NMR, 1H-NMR and Raman spectroscopy suggest that V5+ ions and PEG-200 could react to form intermediate in the electrolyte solution of CP0C. Consequently, V5+ ions in the electrolyte solution of CP0C were V5+-(PEG-200), V5+-monomer, V5+-dimer and V5+-sulfate-complex were not much. The spectral analysis of 1H-NMR suggests that the bond between V5+ ions and PEG-200 is related to variation of the chemical shift of methylene proton. Therefore high-stable V5+ ions such as V5+-dimer and V5+-sulfate-complex which were formed by charge/discharge cycles reduced the conductivity and charge capacity of cell and then deteriorated the cell performance. The hindrance to the formation of the high-stable V5+ ions by PEG-200 caused the prevention of cell deterioration. DSC curve of the VO2 prepared at 700oC for 2 hr from the recovered V2O5 precursor showed that there was an endothermic phase transition at 54.4oC and 76.4oC.
