A Study on Measures to Prevent Recurrence through the Analysis of an Explosion Case at Ammonia Refrigeration Facilities원문보기

Ammonia vapor causes exposed people harm such as a pungent to eye, headache and difficulty in breathing. Ammonia is a colorless but highly irritating gas with a pungent odor that can be perceived. Because of its smell, the release of ammonia can be readily sensed by someone who exposed. Ammonia is also flammable; however it has relatively narrow range of flammable limits compared to other flammable gases. These characteristics of ammonia invite misunderstanding that an explosion of ammonia is rarely happened. An explosion of ammonia in a refrigeration facility has been occurred in Gyeonggi-do Province, Korea, dated February 2014. The explosion has sparked an interest in the dangerous nature of ammonia in academia and refrigeration industry of Korea. In this study, we found that the release and dispersion of ammonia can create hazardous atmospheres. It is known that explosive atmospheres is hardly formed by ammonia releases in uncongested areas, because ammonia is light than air. However, if liquid ammonia is spilled in a enclosed room, We have learned that it spreads in the floor of the room and creates a pool. The evaporated ammonia vapor from the pool in partial enclosure can explode with possible ignition source. In General, ventilation installations are recommended as preventive measures to control explosion incidents. However, the ventilation installations cannot be applicable to the refrigeration facility that uses ammonia as refrigerating medium, because the freezing room should be sealed. From the accident investigation of the explosion case, we suggested that all electronic devices were needed to be switched by explosion proof devices, and communication facility was also needed to be installed to announce to all employees within a building in case alert condition like ammonia releases occurred. We proposed a revised issue for a related gas technical standard that includes a measure to prevent a repeat of such an accident which was suggested by this study.
