In order to predict the deformation behavior of a material using FEM analysis, it is needed to obtain a constitutive equation in which the flow stress is represented as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature. However, it is not easy to obtain the constitutive equation using the conventional testing methods if the material is subject to extreme deformation which is characterized by high-strain rate (~106sec) and high temperature (~1000℃). In this regard, the present study propose a novel testing method for determining the flow stress of material under extreme deformation by applying the energy conservation law to the data of strain, strain rate and temperature distributions in the primary deformation zone in machining. The validation of the proposed method is made for the data obtained through both FEM simulation and 2D orthogonal cutting experiment. By comparing the flow stresses obtained by employing the proposed method with the nominal processes, it is shown that the proposed method could be reliably utilized in constructing the constitutive equation for a material subject to extreme deformation condition.
