Nowadays, on account of the broadband networking technology emergence, the capacity of the network has raised dramatically which causes new high QoS required applications increasing. As each application has its own requirements for delivery, it is desirable for network architecture to provide QoS guaranteed routing architecture to achieve the qualified satisfaction. Many efforts have been dedicated to design QoS architecture, such as IntServ and DiffServ, etc. However, none of the models can be implemented successfully because of some changes needed in the physical infrastructures. With the ability to handle above mentioned drawbacks of today’s networking architecture, SDN is considered a significant element to implement QoS and network optimization algorithms. The goal of this thesis is to design an architecture to support differentiated QoS-based routing on current available technique OpenFlow in SDN. The novel QoS routing architecture in SDN can leverage network resource information and identify classes of travelling flows to get different QoS requirements (i.e. required bandwidth and delay) in order to apply per-flow based differentiated QoS routes. The proposed architecture is mainly composed of four modules: QoS routing framework in SDN controller; link state detection module; online network traffic classification module; QoS routing algorithm module. The proposed algorithm has been compared with Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and performance evaluation has been discussed critically. Main topics of the dissertation are consist of the aforementioned modules and introduced in detail as follows: 1) QoS routing framework in SDN controller: we extend the standard OpenFlow controller which provide QoS-based transmission. The framework offers various interfaces and modules to enable QoS. 2) Link state detection module: in this module, the controller collects the link state (latency and capacity) by BDDP packets used in topology discovery process. We measure network link state changes through BDDP packets, other than query switches by controller on demand. The key insight is that Paceket_out and Pacekt_in messages sent by the controller and switches can be taken to calculate the link state. The advantage is that it generates low overhead and does not introduce any new probing packets that the switches do not know. 3) Online traffic classification module: the research of the online traffic classification using OpenFlow technique is introduced. The controller classifies and analyzes the network traffic without content inspection, just by collecting the statistic information and using K-medoids clustering method to get the accuracy of the QoS requirements (i.e. bandwidth and delay) of each ongoing flow. 4) QoS routing algorithm: the routing algorithm is based on the QoS parameters bandwidth and delay. The goal is to provide the different flows with different routes and best-effort QoS satisfaction. Finally, the proposed QoS routing algorithm is evaluated and analyzed on virtual testbed. The performance has been compared with the existing dynamic routing protocol (OSPF, RIP) and results explore that the proposed routing algorithm can achieve good transmission performance and efficient network resource utilization as well.
