A plane detection using stereo vision has been proposed, which obtains a disparity map as a 3D image and detects planes from the disparity map. By approximating various surfaces as planes, the scene of a disparity map can be summarized and formulated. This planar approximation allows the scene to be easily dealt with. Moreover, the planes can be presented in its exact size in the real world and can be used to detect obstacles and to localize camera’s position. The proposed system is composed of two parts. One is to obtain a disparity map. The other one is to detect planes from it. First, left and right images are captured in order to produce a disparity map. An off-line procedure has been done in advance, which calculates coefficients of lens distortion and stereo rectification. Rectification and noise removal are performed using the coefficients. Belief Propagation and Semi-global stereo matching algorithms produce a disparity map from rectified images. Secondly, plane detection is performed. In order to detect planes, plane hypotheses are extracted and estimated. A disparity map is partitioned into surfaces to extract proper plane hypotheses. Two determinants of plane are proposed for this surface partitioning. One is that one surface shares the same horizontal and vertical slants. The other one is that every pixel in the surface is smoothly connected. By that these determinants are applied to a disparity map, it is separated into nine different types of surface which become plane hypotheses. In order to approximate slants globally, Douglas-Peucker line simplification algorithm is applied to horizontal and vertical scanlines of a disparity map, which works as a line segmentation. Line segments represent the variation of a scanline. Pixels connected to a line segment have the same slant. After surface partitioning is done, extraction of plane hypotheses via plane fitting takes place. Finally, N largest planes which satisfy plane hypotheses are detected. Generated disparity maps and ground-truth plane images for quantitative evaluation of the proposed method, Middlebury stereo dataset which is typically used to evaluate stereo matching algorithms, KITTI stereo dataset which is captured by a running car, has been used for the experiment. Generate 264 disparity maps and ground-truth planes from 3D models and evaluate the proposed method quantitatively. 97.9 percent and 86.6 percent planes from cones and cylinders have been respectively extracted. Evaluation using ground-truth disparity maps of Middlebury stereo dataset and using disparity maps which is generated by stereo matching on the stereo dataset has been performed. Ground-truth disparity maps have extracted about 100 percent of a plane. Stereo matching disparity maps have brought out about 80 percent through 100% of a plane with some noise. Evaluation using KITTI stereo dataset shows that the proposed method has extracted about 80 percent of a plane. Finally stereo images obtained by the proposed system has been used for the experiment. It shows that about 70 percent of a plane has been extracted.
