Affordable and efficient thermoelectric devices that generate electricity from the temperature gradient have the potential to play a key role as a power source for portable electronic devices and as a means to recycle waste-heat. Intrinsically conducting polymers have been considered as promising thermoelectric materials because of their low-cost manufacturing, easy processability, and ability to blend with other materials, as well as high electrical conductivity, high Seebeck coefficient, and low thermal conductivity. Among other conducting polymers, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly-(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), which is a composite of a polythiophene derivative and a polymeric acid as a conducting component and a dispersant, respectively, has been so far the most promising candidate, having a high electrical conductivity under ambient conditions, water-based processability, and easy control of oxidation levels. Researchers have also applied hybridization by incorporating inorganic and carbon materials into PEDOT:PSS to further enhance the thermoelectric properties at ambient temperature. Graphitic carbon is a crystalline form of carbon, a semimetal, a native element mineral, and one of the allotropes of carbon. Graphitic carbon material is the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions. Therefore, it is used in thermochemistry as the standard state for defining the heat of formation of carbon compounds. Low-dimensional carbon materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene platelets have been very effective additives for PEDOT:PSS, showing stable hybridization and outstanding electrical performance. In this theses, we have studied to identify how hybridization of one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNT) and two-dimensional graphene with PEDOT:PSS influences the thermoelectric properties of the composites. We performed in situ polymerization of 3,4-ethlyenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers in water in the presence of CNTs and graphene, dispersed by using a polymeric dispersant, Poly(4-styrenesulfonate)(PSS). We also attempted simple blending process between PEDOT:PSS solution and non-covalent bonded pyrenesulfonate-graphene dispersion. Graphene/PEDOT:PSS hybrid film was manufactured by using layer coating method on the RTCVD graphene sheet. We have analyzed the chemical structures, morphology, and optical and electrical properties of the PEDOT:PSS/carbon material composites. We confirmed the π-π stacking interaction between heteroatom containing aromaticity of conducting polymers and surplus π-electron pz orbital of graphitic carbon materials. We also demonstrate applications of the highly conductive composite films in energy harvesting systems such as thermoelectric devices.
