In this work, a new type of polymer/TiO2 hybrid photoelectrode was developed for the high mechanical stability of flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) under external bending condition. Furthermore, a unique transfer method was developed in order to achieve enhanced photovoltaic performances of flexible DSSCs. Flexible DSSCs based on plastic substrates have attracted much attention mainly due to their light-weight, flexibility and compatibility with roll-to-roll processing, as well as the potential application to the ubiquitous powers. However, for the fabrication of flexible DSSCs on plastic substrates, all processes should be performed at low temperature (150 oC) to prevent the thermal degradation of the plastic substrates. Such low temperature sintering generally results in poor interconnection between the TiO2 nanoparticles and an unsuitable pore structure of the photoelectrode, leading to an inferior mechanical durability. In this context, we developed a new type of polymer/TiO2 hybrid photoelectrode, which can be applied in flexible DSSCs. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was coated on the dye-sensitized TiO2 film by a spin-coating, resulting in a polymer/TiO2 hybrid photoelectrode. Secondly, the commercialization and wide application of next-generation photovoltaics, the cost effectiveness is much more important than the absolute power conversion efficiency itself. Given that consideration, elimination of expensive transparent conducting oxides (TCO) and replacement of conventional glass substrates with flexible plastic substrates could be a viable strategy to realize extremely low cost photovoltaics. Toward this end, for the first time, we report completely TCO-free and flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated on plastic substrates by using the back-contact architecture and transfer method. By adopting unique transfer techniques, the photoelectrode and counter electrode were fabricated by perfectly transferring high-temperature-annealed TiO2 and Pt/carbon films, respectively, onto flexible plastic substrates without any exfoliation. The fabricated photoelectrode assembled with the conventional counter electrode exhibited a new record power conversion efficiency of 8.10% for flexible DSSCs, in spite of the TCO-free structure. In addition, the fabricated completely TCO-free and flexible DSSC exhibited a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 7.27%.
