Helico-axial pumps are core machinery in the offshore plant industry and are installed in oil wells to perform the role of pressurizing and transporting crude oil. As recently developed oil wells have been moved to deep seafloors, pressure specifications required for the pumps have been enhanced. Therefore, most helico-axial pumps applied to oil wells recently have been developed in the form of multistage pumps to satisfy the required pressure specifications. In previous study, design optimization for first-stage helico-axial pump and multi-stage performance evaluation was conducted. Due to differences in inflows, second-stage base impellers have reduced performance compared to first-stage impellers. Therefore, designs considering inflow characteristics according to stage are required. In the present study, design optimization was conducted for the development of second-stage helico-axial pump that satisfy the design specifications. Design variables for the blade angles of second-stage pump were selected and test sets were created by applying the Latin Hypercube sampling (LHS) scheme to the selected design variables. The performance of the created test sets was evaluated using numerical analysis, and numerical optimization was conducted using surrogate model and genetic algorithm based on the performance evaluation results for individual test sets to produce optimum models. Improvement of the performance of the optimum model was confirmed through the numerical analysis. Finally, the reasons for the performance improvement were analyzed through comparisons of the internal flow fields of the base model and the optimum model.
