This study aims to understand Organ Chorale of the Romantic era by comparing and analyzing Organ Chorale Preludes (O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden) of the composers of the Romantic era, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) and Max Reger (1873-1916), focusing on their composing skills.
The Romantic era was the time where nationalistic and individualistic characteristics were standing out, and program music was in vogue, hence organ music using chorale was only continuing to play a role as accompaniment since Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). In such time period, Brahms and Reger continued and developed the flow of organ music using chorale, by composing Chorale Preludes which is a genre of traditional organ music.
As composers of the same time period of romanticism, and as composers that equally sought traditional form such as counterpoint of Bach and classical technique, composing techniques of Brahms and Reger may seem similar, but there are a lot of differences. Brahms used baroque technique together with the lyrical line, or based on absolute music and moderated splendor or virtuosity. On the other hand, Reger combined contrapuntal style with elements of late Romantic, such as rapid chromatic progression of Wagner, hence there is a splendid aspect in playing Reger’s music.
Such characteristics of two composers are shown in Organ Chorale Preludes (O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden) as well. This study aims to help understanding of two pieces by carrying out a comparative study, focusing mainly on the method of having a command of a chorale plain song, the way of progress of affiliated tune of a plain song, the way of progress of chord, and dynamic expression that appear as comparable characteristics in two pieces.
