A study on Market Penetration Strategy of Korean Cosmeceutical Firm's for Southeast Asia : Focusing on Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines원문보기

In the early 2000’s, Southeast Asian cosmetics market began to actively open up via a few member countries of the WTO, such as Vietnam. Southeast Asia in recent years has shown a steady economic growth and increased earnings of 7%. Various factors in Southeast Asia, such as the significant size of the population, high consumption rates, expanding purchasing power of the consumer market, rapid urbanization process, etc. have been encouraging many international companies to launch into this market.
Recently, the Korean cosmetic firms are prepared to launch products that contain both cosmetic and treatment capabilities, “cosmeceuticals,” into the Southeast Asian market in accordance with its evolving living standards and changes in consumer behaviors. With the market entry of Yi Ji Ham Cosmetics, CNP Cha and Pak Cosmetics and other cosmetics firms, coupled with mass pharmaceutical companies such as Dong Sung, Yu Han, and Kukje currently generating revenue in the Southeast Asian market, it’s predicted that there will be fierce competition amongst these companies around market share.
Worth particular consideration is the fact that foreign brands from regions like the US and France already have a high level of brand awareness and well-established channel relations with local partners, which makes it increasingly difficult for competing companies to enter the market; therefore, establishing a comprehensive and strategic market launch plan is of utmost importance.
The recent FTA agreements and the strengthening of bilateral economic collaboration between Korea and Southeast Asia’s key regions of Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia have positively influenced market launch conditions, but in order to ensure consistent competitive advantage, an efficient launch that secures strong market positioning will be critical.
Academic institutions, KOTRA and others are pursuing various policies and research efforts focused on launching into Southeast Asia’s cosmeceuticals market, but the lack of information has been prohibitive in providing sufficient guidance to the many companies who are looking to enter this market.
In this study, survey results from and onsite interviews with those Korean cosmetics firms that had either launched or were preparing to launch into the Southeast Asian market were leveraged to establish the baseline, putting forth the data analysis and implications as a foundation for proposing a successful market launch strategy for Korean cosmetics firms into the cosmeceuticals market.
To summarize, the results from this study can be understood as follows. Upon analyzing the launches into Southeast Asia, the majority of cosmetics firms put in significant efforts to gain and retain local customers, expanding the number of local retail sites to help increase their market share, along with diversifying their product portfolios, bringing differentiated offerings to market, and employing strict quality control. Also, through diverse marketing tactics, they leverage the popularity of Korea’s cultural and entertainment offerings (“Korean Wave,” or “Hallyu”) for enhancing their premium brand image, hoping to capture the purchasing desires of the market’s consumers. Small- to midsized Korean cosmetics firms should take these results into consideration as they construct a launch strategy for the Southeast Asian market.
First, in order for the Korean cosmetics industry to successfully enter the Southeast Asian market, sufficient data analysis along with research on not just the market segmentation but on the impacting cultural and historical elements will be needed to overcome barriers and tap the market potential.
Second, Southeast Asia has distinct characteristics derived from diverse religious influences from Islam, Buddhism, Catholicism, Christianity, etc. as well as each region’s unique culture, so establishing a high level of credibility with local channel partners through tactics such as joint ventures and investments, MOU’s, etc. will be required to increase for the possibility of success within this market.
Third, in Southeast Asia, the US, Japanese, French, and other developed countries are already embedded, China’s more affordable products have also infiltrated the market, and in the case of Korean cosmetics firms, they will need to grow by demonstrating and securing competitive differentiation inside the mid- to high-end market.
Fourth, the firms that secure competitive advantage within the Southeast Asian cosmeceuticals market must successfully overcome any blocking tactics designed to block new competition in the marketplace, localized R&D and expenses, production conditions, requirements, etc. that are inherent to the local business landscape as well as structural barriers to entry and typical hurdles that come with foreign market penetration.
Lastly, comprehensive and aggressive marketing strategies based on thorough analysis of the various regions within the target launch market is needed, particularly one that actively leverages the advantages of the Korean Wave.
This study is based 2014 standards, focusing on those domestic SMB cosmetic firms that have either ventured into or are in the process of venturing into Southeast Asia’s major cosmeceuticals target regions of Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The research period started in February 2015, encompassing 200 mid-management employees of the local onsite branch, conducting surveys and basing 188 survey questionnaires as the basis for this research study.
The survey consisted of 5 different categories, covering operations and outlook, labor, marketing, distribution, and finance. Through the resulting data, the aggregated factors for consideration in regards to launching in Southeast Asia’s cosmeceuticals market were analyzed, and with these results, appropriate launch strategies per region were proposed.
The resulting analysis is as follows. First, So
