The purpose of this study was to investigate the use and preparation of enteral nutrition formula by the types of hospitals. A mail survey was conducted to the hospitals nationwide from August 24 to October 13, and dieticians in 284 hospitals (37 senior general hospitals, 92 general hospitals, 60 hospitals, 95 nursing hospitals) responded (response rate 41.5%). A Nutrition Support Team (NST) was operated in 33.8% of the hospitals. and the director of the NST was a physician in 96.9% of the hospitals and a dietician in 3.1%. In terms of the main arbiter for enteral nutrition formula products, the percentage of a dietician was the highest in senior general hospitals, general hospitals, convalescent hospitals at 78.4%, 64.7%, 56.2% respectively, however in hospitals the doctors had the highest percentage at 57.7%. For the management department of enteral nutrition formula, all hospitals had the highest percentage of the nutrition team managing it. Results of hospital nutrition management conditions analysis showed that 85.4% of all hospitals provided enteral nutrition formula. Among these, the highest percentage went to those providing newly released products just as they are at 87.4% of all hospitals, and next came those who provided a mix of newly released and ordinary products at 15.1%, 11.8% answered that they provide by mixing only newly released products, and 5.5% said that they provide by only grinding ordinary products. As for reasons that they prepare medicine through enteral nutrition formula, the highest percentage was in order to supplement the side effects of commercial products, and they were prioritizing consideration of patients’ compliance when choosing enteral nutrition formula. Also, in terms of reasons for requesting enteral nutrition formula product changes, the highest was for diarrhea at 92.8%. We investigated the prescription breakdown of enteral nutrition formula depending on diagnosis names of patients for providing enteral nutrition formula for a day, and results showed that the elderly group of over 60 years old occupied the highest percentage at 75.6%, and this was showing that the number of enteral nutrition formula prescriptions of elderly populations was more than half. Also, the higher the age group, the higher the prescription percentage of enteral nutrition formula as well. Ratio to provide the results of a single survey of commercial agents to provide enteral nutrition formula method according to hospital diagnosis is the most advanced hospitals were higher by 85.8% and 90.5% two, 82.7% hospital care, the hospital showed a 63.0%. For percentages of providing by preparing medicine by illness was the highest in kidney diseases at 21.9%, and next came heart diseases at 21.6%, and diabetes diseases at 18.5%. Currently, commercial enteral nutrition formula are categorized into 8 types in terms of food codes, and categories related to diseases only pertain to 4 types of diseases (diabetes, kidney diseases, enteric diseases, inborn metabolic diseases); the reality is that just like this study’s results, there are no products that are right for various illnesses like the high rank diseases of enteral nutrition formula prescription – brain disease, respiratory disease, brain disease, cancer. Also, although commercial enteral nutrition formula is excellent in quality, hygienic, and can do continuous injection according to the uniformalization of nutrient broth, it was shown that the percentage of providing by preparing medicine was as high as 13.6%. The main reason for providing by preparing medicine was shown to be because there aren’t various products that can replace them when side effects like diarrhea after tube feeding and so on happen, so we learned that the development of enteral nutrition formula that’s appropriate for the characteristics and clinical state by each patient’s illness is very necessary. Therefore, we think that in order to be able to develop and produce products of various diseases and characteristics, we will need to revise the categorization system in terms of current food codes.
