The flow induced vibrations (FIV) of the cylinder are a typical fluid structure interaction problem that has received a great deal of attention in recent years because of its various engineering applications.
This work is an attempt to investigate the effect of the rounded corners on near wake flow features of cylinder in both stationary and oscillating conditions. Six models with various radius to diameter ratios, R/D = 0 (square cylinder), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 (circular cylinder), where R is the corner radius and D is the characteristic dimension of the body were studied. The finite volume commercial code in conjunction with the moving mesh scheme implemented via a User Defined Function (UDF) was applied to simulate the two dimensional flow past square cylinder with different radius to diameter ratios. The influences of stationary, forced and naturally oscillating cylinder with various investigating parameters are carefully analyzed to explore the complex flow features. This research establishes the capability of present numerical methodology for understanding the flow physical phenomenon for square cylinder with different corner radius and investigate the parameter effects that may potentially change the cylinder dynamics
The present results concluded that near wake flow features around the square cylinder in stationary and oscillating condition is a strong function of the rounded corners. The research findings for stationary cylinder suggested that with a rounded corner ratio around R/D = 0.2, mean drag coefficient (CD) and root mean square value of the lift coefficient (CL,RMS) can be greatly reduced, as compared to circular and square cylinders. Also the critical incidence angle for the rounded corner stationary cylinder—corresponding to the minimum CD, the minimum CL,RMS, and the maximum Strouhal number—shifted to a lower incidence angle compared with the sharp corner square cylinder. The minimum drag and lift coefficient for square cylinder were observed for the critical incidence angle αcri = 12°, whereas for R/D = 0.1 to 0.4, the minimum drag and lift coefficient were found to be within the range of α = 5° to 10. The results obtained from the forced oscillating cylinder shows a significant increase in the CD and CL,RMS values as compared to the stationary cylinder. The results obtained from the forced oscillating cylinder shows a 10% increase in CD and 40% increase in CL,RMS values as compared to the stationary cylinder. In order to address the 1 DOF and 2 DOF FIV aspects of naturally oscillating square cylinder with different rounded corners, the transverse and streamwise displacement of the cylinder alongwith the lift and the drag coefficient are analyzed under different frequency ratio, Fr. The 1 DOF and 2 DOF natural oscillation results show the significant effect of varying frequency ratio, Fr and R/D on the FIV modes of the cylinder. The results indicate that with the decrease of R/D the transverse amplitude of the cylinder decreases, hence the lift and drag forces acting on the cylinder is reduced. It was found that for naturally oscillating cylinders the minimum transverse amplitude, the minimum drag and lift forces can be obtained for the square cylinder, whereas maximum for the circular cylinder.
