ABSTRACT
L2 reading is an interactive process in which readers utilize both low level processing (linguistic knowledge) and high level processing (background knowledge) to construct the meaningful comprehension of given texts. However, in an EFL environment, the focus of L2 reading education is primarily on low level processing. The fact that readers comprehend texts employing not merely L2 linguistic knowledge but also their existing background knowledge is often neglected. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between background knowledge and its effect on reading comprehension. The research question formulated for the current study is: ‘Is there an effect of background knowledge on EFL reading comprehension?’ A total of 44 participants majoring in either Politics or Science were selected for this study. The materials employed for measuring reading comprehension were extracted from actual test forms of the TOEFL. Three tests with different contents— one politics related, another science related, and the other neutral –were adopted and reading comprehension tests were administered to all participants. The attained data was statistically analyzed. The findings indicate that there was a background knowledge effect on reading comprehension only in the case of participants majoring in Science. As for participants in Politics, the effect of background knowledge was not found. However, when data was analyzed based on test type, participants in Politics performed better than those of Science on the politics-related test, which implies that they displayed a background knowledge effect. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications for improving EFL learners’ reading skills are presented.
