Rolling process either cold rolling or hot rolling is one of the popular metal forming process that have been used for many application in many industries fields. One of the most effecting on the quality and productivity of product in rolling process is what a kind of material for roll. Cast iron, adamite cast roll, Ni-grain cast iron and Cr-grain cast iron are previous generation for roll materials. Recently many researchers pay attention to develop kind of material that suitable in high condition for rolling application, one of the precious material has been developed is High Speed Steel (HSS) roll. HSS roll is ferrous based alloy of the Fe-C-X multicomponent system where X represents of alloying elements. HSS roll has excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness at high temperature, high wear resistance and good toughness. In other hand sometimes defect or failure condition such as bumping, side wear, surface cracking, thermal breakage, fire crack etc. are occurred after some rolling process. Due to these problems, should be developed kind of HSS that has better mechanical properties and solved the problem that usually occurs on HSS roll. Addition of others element as refinement agent become one of the chosen method to solve the defects problem on HSS roll, because the addition of an element successfully changes the microstructures and mechanical properties of HSS roll. This study was discussed the effects of combination addition of Titanium (Ti), Niobium (Nb) and Cobalt (Co) on microstructures and mechanical properties of HSS roll. These elements have known as strong refinement agents that have been investigated by some researchers. In this study 4 specimens were observed. The investigation shows that microstructure of all specimens consists of matrix (primary-γ and eutectic-γ), MC, M2C, M6C, M7C3 and M23C6 carbides. The microstructure characteristic can be divided into two different groups: without Nb addition (PH and PT) and with Nb addition (PTN and PTNC). The specimens without Nb addition have excessive M2C, M6C, M7C3 carbides, otherwise the Nb addition specimens have large volume fraction of MC carbide. Moreover addition of Ti, Nb and Co simultaneously caused significant decreasing in primary-γ cell size and interdendritic carbide network. Whereas addition only 0.09% Ti in PT produced insignificant change in the decreasing of primary-γ cell size. Mechanical properties of all specimens show that bulk hardness and matrix hardness of as-cast specimen increased sequentially with the addition of Ti, Nb and Co. But after quenching- tempering, PTN has lowest hardness among others specimens. It shows that Nb addition did not give much effect in secondary hardening due to less carbides dissolved into matrix during austenitizing. In other hand PTNC although it contents with Nb, it has highest hardness due to effects of Co addition more significant than Nb. Furthermore, tensile strength of PTNC is 973 MPa it became highest value then followed by PT, PH and PTN with the value are 798 MPa, 857MPa, and 781 respectively. Tensile strength value is affected by some factors e.g. matrix microstructure, primary γ cell size and size or volume fraction of carbide. PTNC has smallest primary γ cell size. It supports to create small size ductile fracture area but distribute uniformly in all areas. In contrary PH has biggest primary-γ cell size. Meanwhile PTN has coarser MC carbide than others specimens. Because of that it causes the excessive of cleavage area and decreasing the tensile strength of this specimen. Whereas PH and PT have excessive volume fraction of interdendritic carbide that were caused the weakest area during crack propagation. For achieving high tensile strength, optimum and proportional microstructure condition must be formed. The most proportional condition is obtained in PTNC. In other hand, fracture surface investigation shows that the fracture surface area of PH and PT are dominated by the interdendritic area which is consist of Mo-rich and W-rich area, while PTN and PTNC fracture area mostly affected by the vanadium-rich area.
