M.A. Thesis A Study on Hamartia Occuring in Audiovisualized Juvenile Fiction -Focusing on the Novels Wandeuk-yi and Elegant Lies, by Kim Ryeo-ryeonged on A Portrait- Park, Sun-Hwa Department of Reading and Writing Graduate School Yeungnam University (Supervised by Professor Roh, Sang-Rae) Abstract This study discusses the aspect of the hamartia(lack), or character flaws, in dramatized juvenile fiction, observing that in the process of creating their works, authors recognize that their targeted readers have their own unique traits, and a contemporary ‘here and now’ consciousness. This study examined the reality of juveniles and adolescent fiction through surveys on teenagers’ reading habits and thoughts on juvenile fiction. This study elucidates the elements of hamartia utilizing Kim Ryeo-ryeong’s dramatized novels Wandeuk-yi and Elegant Lies as examples, to explore the ways character flaws are changed in the process of dramatization. This study also surveyed teen readers, revealing the consequences of evincing character flaws in juvenile fiction and several associated issues. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows: Firstly, it is imperative to consider teenagers as fully developed humans with contemporary consciousness which changes as society changes, rather than perceiving them as puerile or pigeonholing them. Secondly, teenagers in the digital media era are generally more interested in and responsive to audio visual and digital contents than textual contents. Thirdly, teenagers are free to choose between reading a novel or watching a dramatized version of it (or both, in either order) depending on their personal tastes and circumstances. Fourthly, the types of hamartia in Kim Ryeo-ryeong’s aforementioned novels appear as ‘tension at home’, ‘tension outside the home’, and ‘tension both in and outside the home’. Lastly, the overuse of hamartia in juvenile fiction can be mitigated during the dramatization process by reducing the number of flaws, and concentrating on developing the protagonist’s central flaws well. This paper discusses diverse issues associated with juvenile fiction and adolescents who have experienced the four types of content that are the subject of this study. When authors create works it is advisable to first consider the opinions of teenagers that if hamartia is exaggerated to the point of being affectatious, they will not watch it. The perception of teenagers that they have been deprived of their rights as pure viewers because juvenile novels have limited definitions of ‘teenagers’ implies that thus far, discussions of juvenile novels have, counterintuitively, failed to include teenage readers. Key words:Juvenile Fiction, adolescent readers, teenagers reading habits, hamartia(lack), Wandeuk-yi, Elegant Lies
