The purpose of this study is to develop jazz class plans for high school students and to help teachers make practical class plans that enrich various aesthetic musical experiences for students according to referentialism, formalism and expressionism of musical aesthetics. For this, referentialism, formalism and expressionism of musical aesthetics are reviewed. The characteristics of jazz as an impromptu musical performance and having swing rhythm, musical tone and phrase are defined. In addition, the educational value of jazz based on its history and musical factors are reviewed. “Music and Life“ and ”Career in Music,“ textbooks by the 2009 revised curriculum are analyzed based on aesthetic perspective. The details of the class plan created based on the results are as follows: First, from a referentialist perspective, the history of jazz was examined according to social backgrounds and representative musicians, and music was appreciated by era. The backbeat of ragtime, a type of early jazz, is used in the swing of traditional jazz as swing rhythm, which leads to comping and a walking bass in modern jazz. This correlation was studied from a referentialist perspective. Real sound-focused classes using various media such as scores, sound sources and pictures will be helpful in developing a musical concept. Second, from a formalist perspective, chords and rhythmical factors were selected from “Fly Me to the Moon.” Substitute chords and secondary dominant 7th chords and syncopations in C major were utilized in reconstructing the chords and melody of a foreign folk song, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” With an application called GarageBand, students can understand structure and factors of music regardless of their instrumental abilities. By improving logical understanding of music and recording arranged music, various musical experiences and the ability to think musically can be achieved. Third, from an expressionist perspective, different interpretations for one musical piece were appreciated, and various characteristics of music were experienced. Additionally, the teacher let students hear music and express their thoughts and feelings freely through mind maps, composition, scat, and other musical elements which the teacher suggested. The musical elements include bossa nova, 3/4 time swing and 4/4 time swing for common blues, mixo lydian scale, lydian b7 with no avoid notes and a blues scale for scale in order to reduce dissonance. This is expected to help students improve their musical expressive power and internalize musical values. The study suggests a high school jazz class plan from aesthetic perspectives and follow-up studies on teaching methods and educational philosophy for educational applications of jazz are expected to be conducted.
