Recently, electro-adsorptive deionization (EAD) process has been attracting attention as a low-energy consuming and efficient desalination process. Bipolar membrane (BPM) is the key component dominating the desalination performances of the EDA system. Desalination can be achieved by the ion transport toward BPM when electrical potential is applied under forward bias condition. Moreover, the regeneration of ion-exchange materials is needed for the continuous desalination and can be achieved through water dissociation occurred at the bipolar junction by applying electric field under reverse bias condition. The water dissociation is not the main purpose of the BPMs utilized in EAD processes (unlike conventional BPMs) and high ion-exchange capacity is required for the removal of a large amount of ions. Research on the EAD process is currently in its beginning stage and therefore the development of the BPM for EAD processes is urgent. In this study, therefore, the development of the BPMs with excellent water-splitting efficiency, high ion-exchange capacity, and low electrical resistance has been carried out. First, pore-filled anion-exchange membranes (PFAEMs) with a thickness of ca. 25 μm were prepared to fabricate the BPM having low electrical resistance and excellent mechanical properties. The base BPMs were then prepared by casting sulfonated polyetheretherketon (SPEEK) ionomer solution onto the pore-filled anion-exchange membrane. In addition, catalytic materials were introduced at the bipolar junction to enhance the water-splitting performances of the BPMs. Iron hydroxide(III) and iron oxide were chosen as the water-splitting catalysts and the solution composition maintaining high dispersibility of the catalytic substances was successfully determined. They were then efficiently introduced at the bipolar junction by a spraying method. As a result, iron oxide and iron hydroxide catalysts revealed the optimum water-splitting characteristics at the loading amount of 6.6∼7.8 µg/cm2 and 4.6 µg/cm2, respectively. It was confirmed that both iron oxide and iron hydroxide are shown to be excellent water-splitting catalysts. In addition, iron oxide is believed to be more desirable in terms of the durability than iron hydroxide. Meanwhile, the use of iron hydroxide is shown to be rather desirable compared to iron oxide with regard to the water-splitting performance. In this study, the BPMs for the EAD application have also been prepared by laminating ion-exchange layers having high ion-exchange capacity on both sides of the base BPM. Commercial ion-exchange resin powder having high ion-exchange capacity was mixed with ionomer binder and solvent and then the mixture was cast on the base BPM. Since traditional BPMs for the EAD application were prepared by using inert polymer without ion-exchange capacity as a binder, they have some drawbacks such as high electrical membrane resistance and low water-splitting capability. In this study, therefore, the use of a binder containing ion-exchange groups has been considered to reduce the electrical resistance of the BPMs. SPEEK and quaternized polyphenylene oxide (QPPO) were employed as the binder materials for the cation-exchange layer and the anion-exchange layer, respectively. First, the monopolar membranes were prepared with various mixing ratios of ionomer binder and ion-exchange resin powder and characterized to investigate the optimal composition of ion-exchange layers. As increasing the ion-exchange resin content, the ion-exchange capacity is shown to increase and also the electrical resistance is reduced. Otherwise the ion-exchange resin power could be separated from the layer owing to the poor binding strength. Therefore, the optimal mixing (weight) ratios of ionomer binder and ion-exchange resin powder were revealed to be 55 : 45 and 75 : 25 for cation-exchange layer and anion-exchange layer, respectively. Based on the above conditions, the BPMs for the EAD application (SMU-EAD) were fabricated and the water-splitting experiments and EAD performance tests were carried out. As a result, the SMU-EAD membrane showed significantly low electrical membrane resistance due to the use of ionomer binders and the water-splitting performance was also superior to that of the commercial BPM. Moreover, the desalination and regeneration were characterized via 6-compartment cell experiments for evaluating the EAD performance and it was confirmed that the SMU-EAD membrane exhibited more predominant desalination efficiency compared with that of the commercial BPM under a constant voltage condition.
