Carbon monoxide (CO) which is naturally produced by the action of heme oxygenase plays diverse biological functions. Abnormalities in its metabolism related to a variety of diseases, including hypertension, heart failure, and inflammation. Therefore, the rapid, reliable detection of CO is essential to elucidate its numerous biological functions. However, the measurement of CO is still challenging due to its low concentration, rapid diffusion, and various interference. Indeed, the utility of a tin (Sn)-deposited Pt electrode, a previously well-known amperometric CO sensing electrode has been hindered by significant interference from nitric oxide (NO). Reducing NO interfering effect is one of the important factors because NO’s biological functions are closely related to CO’s. Herein I report a novel CO sensor prepared with aniline derivatives as a sensing membrane. The films of aniline derivatives on a Pt electrode are prepared via cyclic voltammetry. A series of aniline derivatives with electron donating (e.g., methyl and ethyl) and electron withdrawing (e.g., bromo, chloro, fluoro, trifluoromethyl, cyanide, and sulfonic acid) groups were employed to evaluate the substitution effect on sensor performance. In addition, using a perfluorinated xerogel membrane has been allowed to further alter the selectivity pattern, eventually reducing interference from hydrophilic species such as nitrite ion, ascorbic acid, uric acid, and acetaminophen. Furthermore, heme which can scavenge of NO was introduced to further reduce NO interference.
