The train control system has gone through a splendid improvement in the last two decades. Especially, ETCS and CBTC now became two major technologies in the area of the train control system that established international standards to be complied as their market share gets dominant among others. ETCS currently implemented in high speed line and mainline was developed with a sole purpose of providing interoperability among train control systems in different European countries. The ETCS is now implemented in KTX as well. CBTC was developed in order to maximize the line capacity in a given time and the current usage of CBTC in urban railway network is worldwide. In comparison with ETCS, CBTC has a technological strength of minimizing the headway between trains with Moving Block System. The Moving Block System is not applied to the current ETCS L2, but ETCS L3 will comprise it.
It has been already few years since the CBTC was introduced to Korean urban railway and implemented in Shinbundang Line, YongIn EverLine and Busan-Gimhae LRT. However, once all signalling systems implemented in Korean urban railway lines are products from foreign manufacturers, a series of difficulties in operating and maintaining the line constantly occurs. Especially, an increment in time expended for identifying failure causes and providing appropriate solutions as well as the cost on maintenance due to discontinuous components are two major issues.
Therefore, a localization of the train control system with moving block system is a key factor to overcome difficulties mentioned above and secure technological competitiveness against constantly changing international railway market.
The kernel in Moving Block System is a control of separation between the head train and the train following afterward. Therefore, a calculation on safety distance is necessary to establish a target point. A minimum acceptable safety distance must be calculated precisely so that trains can stop before they approach to obstacles and trains after the brake application.
In this article, a method to control train separation for destination establishment considering safety brake model for calculating safety distance, safety distance fluctuated with train movement and movement restricting elements of trains on wayside will be proposed with a references from the line condition, train control system and train performance of Shinbundang Line. With a purpose for assessing an accuracy of train separation control method, the author ran a simulation of the section between Gangnam and JeongJa station of the Shinbundang Line.
The simulation was conducted by operating two trains with the minimum train headway and the maximum speed. By the end of the simulation, EB was applied on the head train and distance between them was measured after two trains stopped completely. Then, the result value was compared to the safety distance configured in the given area. Consequently. it was showed that there was no significant difference between the distance from the simulation and safety distance calculated from the safety brake model.
Regarding to the travel time, the actual travel time took thirty seconds longer than the simulated travel time since the simulated travel time didn't take a consideration of the time taken for train door operation and traction system response. Therefore, it could be concluded that the result does not necessarily cause safety degradation. With the result from the simulation, Shinbundang Line could reduce time taken for train departure (by three to four seconds) after modifying the circuit of on-board signaling device.
The author could verify a veracity of the safety brake model and argue that train separation control can be even more optimized upon improvement of inaccuracy in train position detection.
At the end, it is anticipated that the result will provide remarkable contribution to localization of the moving block system.
