Reverse engineering requires a scanning technology for the measurement and analysis of an existing product and a printing technology for the form verification and design measurement of a finished product. However, the precision of most printing technologies is not as high as that of scanning technologies, and thus, scanning technologies are evolving rapidly to narrow the gap. Recently, in addition to commonly used 3D scanners, a computed tomography (CT) measuring machine that can scan not only the exterior but also the interior of a product by beaming X-rays was released. This shows that the scanning technology to back up 3D printing will continue to advance, and accordingly, the data and reverse engineering techniques considering the precision of 3D printers are getting more important. In this study, an experiment was conducted using the 3D scanner commonly used in reverse engineering techniques and the newly introduced CT measuring machine. The hole, width, and angle of specimens with various shapes were designated; the error rates of the dimensions in modeling generated from scanning with each device were compared; and then the models were printed using a 3D printer. A secondary comparative analysis of the two printed specimens was conducted, and the cause of the error rate of the dimensions that occur in the printing process after scanning with each device and the difference associated with variation in shape were also analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the featured shape for each scanning application method and issues to consider in reverse engineering were presented, and the CT measuring machine was recommended as the method to minimize the error rate of the dimensions and ensure efficient reverse engineering.
