Inorganic pigments have been utilized in various applications such as inks, plastic, textiles and cosmetics. Among the pigments, cadmium-based inorganic red pigments, such as CdS and CdSe, have been much paid attention to in pigment industry because of their excellent weather resistance, thermal resistance, and chromogenic capability. However, Cd is one of the hazardous materials which exert a negative influence on environment and human health. Recent investigation focuses on eco-friendly inorganic red pigments such as ferrite and hematite, instead of toxic pigments. The environment-friendly iron oxides have been widely used as pigments for color coatings. In spite of the merit, the usage in high-quality products is very limited, since the color of iron oxide pigments are unclear and unstable in thermal and chemical environments. To solve these drawbacks, it is needed to develop a clear reddish brown iron oxide pigment. Recently, several researchers have been studying metal-substituted iron oxides to improve the color tone and stability. The researchers have reported Al-substituted hematite pigments to show high color stability including high-temperature resistance. The mechanism on color enhancement of the red pigment is still unclear and further study is in progressing. Thus, for the enhancement of reddish color, the relationship between chromaticity and metal substitution, particle size and morphology has been investigated.
