Food waste generate about 15,000 tons per day corresponds to 27 % of the total waste volume in South Korea. The direct landfilling and ocean dumping of food waste have been banned since 2005 and 2012, respectively. Currently, composting and feeding are the most used methods for recycling of food waste. However, eco-friendly and efficient recycling methods are required because they have problems such as the side effects of livestock and plant growing. Bio-char is produced by Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) that is one of the thermal decomposition methods. Bio-char researches have been focused on availability of using fuel and soil conditioner. In this study, biochar was evaluated as adsorbent for the applied assessment of heavy metal contaminated water, based on the previous researches of evaluated the possibility. In Korea, abandoned mine are about 2,000points. It makes acid mine drainage(AMD) that is pH 3.5 and containing heavy metals such as As, Cd, Pb. Therefore, If biochar used as an adsorbent, it was expected two effects like the pH neutralized and heavy metals adsorption. They are 60 Kg and 4 hours that are the optimum amount of food waste and retention time for producing of biochar. It was based on the highest results of iodine adsorption capacity. Chemical activation was performed for increasing of the specific surface area of biochar using potassium hydroxide, it showed 494 times wider than before by BET analysis. Artificial AMD was prepared as 30 mg/L concentration include Pb, Cd, Al, As by considering the average heavy metal concentrations of 272 points. The optimum ratios of the biochar (g) and AMD (mL) are 1:20 at 100 mg/L and 1:100 at 10 mg/L. Also, optimal adsorption time is 5 minutes. They were determined from batch-test. The column test were performed using flushed artificial mine drainage of 50 mL for 12 hours and analyzed the concentration and pH of the effluent. synergistic effect of the pH was observed in the high initially, and it was showed the results similar to activated carbon for one hour. The breakthrough points in four heavy metals were identified as the passes time of 80 mL influent. The end points of Al, As, Cd are 16 mL. Pb is Showed 560 mL end point. The removal rates of As, Cd, Pb and Al are 11.03 %, 11.41 %, 38.27 % and 0.19 %, respectively. It Shows removal rates of arsenic and cadmium are better than the control group. Also removal efficiency of lead is 2.87 times higher than GAC. Therefore, the results of batch experiments conducted by activated bio-char, the optimum adsorption conditions were derived. Removal of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), aluminum (Al) was confirmed as 99 %. The results of the fixed-bed column testing, high removal efficiency and pH holding force confirmed in the initial, removal efficiency of As, Cd, Pb was determined to be similar level with other adsorbents.
