This study is a descriptive survey research conducted to be used as fundamental data for development of intervention program with regard to parents’ fever management for their children by investigating the level of knowledge and practice on fever management of mothers with children under preschool age at home and correlation of the two parameters. The data was collected from 112 mothers with children in age between 1 and 6 attending three different daycare centers located in J city during the period between April 4th 2016 and April 15th 2016. As research tools, fever management knowledge scale that was developed by the author based on scales of parents’ knowledge on childhood fever management which was developed by Jeong Yongseon et al.(2010) was used for knowledge on fever management. and fever management practice scale that was prepared by re-structuring was used for practice of the fever management. SPSS 23.0 was used to analyze the data. Real number and percentage were used to present general and fever-related characteristics of subjects, and descriptive statistical analysis was applied to analyze subjects’ scores for knowledge and practice on fever management, and independent t-test and one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the differences in knowledge and practice on fever management according to subjects’ general characteristics. Scheffé test was conducted for post hoc test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to analyze the between fever management knowledge and practice. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) Average age of the subjects was 34.80 years old with 54 (48.2%) individuals, the largest proportion of subjects, were ‘under 35’. The most number of subjects were ‘graduates of 4-year-program university or higher’ as 65 (58%) responded so. For occupation, ‘none’ was the most prevalent with 62 (55.4%) subjects and ‘none’ was also the most prevalent for religion with 58 (51.8%) subjects. For number of children, ‘2 children’ was the most abundant answer with 57 (50.9%) subjects. 2) Among the subjects, most were revealed not to have education on fever management as 99 (88.4%) mothers never had education on fever management. The largest proportion of mother responded ‘medical practitioners’ as the source of the fever-related information as 83.9% answered so. In addition, number of fever experience of children was 9.83 times in average as ‘1 – 5 times’ was the most frequent response answered by 47.3%. ‘Yes’ was abundant for experience of hospital visit due to children’s fever as 108 (96.4%) subjects answered so; and the average number of hospital visit in those 108 subjects was 7.10 times and the most subjects answered ‘1 – 5 times’ as 63% responded so. 99 (88.4%) subjects answered ‘No’ for the experience of children’s febrile seizure; and the average number of febrile seizure in those 13 subjects experienced febrile seizure was 1.62 times with 61.5% answering ‘1 time’ and 38.5% answering ‘2 times or more’. Multiple response analysis on route of antipyretic administration revealed the most abundant route as ‘doctor’s prescription’ with 98.2%, ‘purchasing from a pharmacy’ with 49.1%, and ‘household medicine’ with 17.9% in sequence. 3) The score for knowledge on fever management was 29.05 ± 3.38 points (percentage of correct answer: 70.85%) out of 41 points. The score for the pathophysiologic area which is a sub-item of fever management was 10.64 ± 1.74 points (percentage of correct answer: 70.93%) out of 15 points; and the questions with the highest percentage of correct answer in pathophysiologic area were the questions on the problems that may be caused by the fever whereas the questions with the lowest percentage of correct answer were the questions on the relationship between the fever and other health problems. The score for fever management area was 18.41 ± 2.56 points (percentage of correct answer: 70.80%) out of 26 points; and the questions with the highest percentage of correct answer were the questions on the standard for visiting hospital due to fever, water supply while having fever, nutritional management, rest and relief, storage method for antipyretic, and the dose of antipyretic administration whereas the questions with the lowest percentage of correct answer were the questions on the standard for antipyretic administration, side effect of the antipyretic, and the time point for tepid massage. The average score for fever management was 81.40 ± 8.40 points (81.40%); and the questions with the highest score were about the dose of antipyretic administration, method of antipyretic storage, rest and relief, water supply, the standard for temperature measurement, and the standard for visiting hospital whereas the questions with the lowest score were about clothe and bedding management, method of body temperature measurement, direction of antipyretic administration, time point for tepid massage, and method of tepid massage. 4) The characteristic that presented difference in knowledge on fever management was the number of children. Mothers with ‘2 children’ presented higher level of knowledge than mother with ‘3 or more children’ (F = 3.38, p=.037). There was no characteristic showing difference in practice of fever management. 5) Positive correlation(r = .31, p=.001) was found between mothers’ knowledge and practice on fever management. The pathophysiologic area(r=.22,p=.023) and fever management area(r=.29,p=.002) that were sub-items of knowledge presented positive correlation with practice. Although the results revealed the level of mothers’ knowledge and practice on fever management was not low; however, it was found to be not reaching the knowledge level required for appropriate fever management for children and not sufficient for efficient childhood fever management. In addition, higher level of practice on fever management was found with higher score of knowledge on fever management. Hence, intervention program should be developed for appropriate fever management at home since mothers must practice the fever management based on clear understanding on fever management while managing children’s fever in the absence of medical practitioners. In this study, knowledge and practice on childhood fever management were comprehensively evaluated based on mothers with healthy children at home and correlation between knowledge and practice was revealed; hence, this study is significant since it provided fundamental data for development of future intervention program for childhood fever management.
