The western music, which was initiatively led by Europe in the nineteenth century, was transformed into a new world of music in the twentieth century after going through the time of political turmoil. Some of the composers who were actively engaged in composition in the area of western Europe and Russia had emigrated to the United States and contributed to the diverse and profound development of music in America.
Born in 1929, Robert Muczynski(1929-2010) was a pianist and composer in America. He was recognized as one of the representative American composers of Neoclassicism, influenced by the music of Béla Bartók(1881-1945), Walter Piston (1894-1989), and Samuel Barber(1910-1981). Among these composers, especially Bartók would be mentioned for this study.
It is assumed that the influence of Bartók was strongly revealed in the music of Muczynski, as considering the period of Bartók's musical activities in America, the compositional techniques that he had shown, and the vigorous dissemination of《Mikrokosmos》.
Based on this hypothesis, this study has been accomplished through analyzing Muczynski's《Suite for Piano》 Op. 13 to figure out the influence of Bartók's music, which especially place a greater emphasis on rhythm in the piano music representing various attempts.
First, the life of Muczynski and Bartók was looked through and then, three piano works of Bartók;《Allegro barbaro》 Sz. 49 , 《Suite》 Op. 14 and《Sonata》 Sz. 80, in which Bartók's rhythmic traits were appeared profoundly, were selected for the analysis. As a result, the characteristics of Bartók's rhythm could be analyzed with ten items; irregular accent and slur, hemiola, syncopation, polyrhythm, Bulgarian rhythm, ostinato, frequently changing meter, percussive effect by the rhythm of repeated notes, accents on the weak beat and diminution of rhythm. On the basis of this aspect, Muczynski's 《Suite for Piano》 Op. 13 was analyzed in detail that the ten elements of rhythmic traits shown in Bartók's piano music were also revealed in Muczynski's work. The influence of Bartók appeared in the piano music of Muczynski was hereby verified.
