The use of air induction nozzles on boom sprayers applying sprays to arable crops has become an established way of achieving high levels of drift control. Such nozzles create a spray with relatively large sized droplets that have air inclusions within the droplets such that they behave differently from droplets created with conventional nozzles. Because the droplets are large there are fewer of them and there is then the potential for small targets such as weeds at early stages of growth to receive an inadequate dose or coverage to give good control. This study measured the droplet size distributions produced by a range of air induction nozzles operating at 3 bar of injection pressure. Geometrical parameter of newly air induction nozzles design are investigated. Based on mathematical modeling of two phase flow of Gas-Liquid jet pump theory, the ratio of Venturi throat to pre-orifice diameter (Dt/Dp) of 1.4 is derived for the first version of air induction nozzle, named 2D air induction nozzle. In addition, to see the trend of effect of the size of Venturi throat diameter (Dt) the ranged of Dt/Dp are varied from 1.2 to 2.2. Otherwise, others geometrical parameters of air induction nozzle such as air orifice (Da) varied form 3.24–4.86 mm and the volume of mixing chamber varied from 5-11 mm are investigated. The effect of the ratio of discharge to pre-orifice (D0/Dp) are investigated for water flowing-out from the nozzle. This water flowing-out has a major effect for the nozzle characteristic due to the water are blocked the air intake flowrate into the nozzle. This phenomena is effect on the spray characteristics of air induction nozzle with unpredictable. Moreover, the nozzle discharge orifice tips design are also the main functions for currently nozzle design, due to these are can control the ability of droplet sizes and spray characteristics. In generally, flat fan nozzles are widely used for broadcast spraying of herbicides. In order to achieve uniform coverage to the target, it is directly related to the spray angles. By applied the mathematical model for design the exactly mass flowrate of the fluid and the effect of the tips design on the spray angle, several conditions are set up for this investigation. Finally, by the result of 2D air induction and flat fan tip nozzle design, the second design air induction nozzle, named (3D air induction nozzle) are design and manufactured based on the design target of 0.00025 of air-liquid ratio (ALR). A Phase-Doppler Particles Anemometry (PDPA) is used for spray measurements. The measurements of size and velocity distributions based on the Doppler signal can also be helpful for analyzing the atomization characteristics of droplets. An alternative approach is the use of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate a whole field of spray characteristics especially to study on the spray angles in this research work. As the result, from 2D air induction nozzles investigation showed that the discharge orifice should large enough to prevent the water flowing-out at lease D0/Dp ≥ 2. Moreover, these result showed that, each geometrical parameters have an effect on the air intake flowrate and air-liquid ratio (ALR). The size of Venturi throat diameter has strongly effect on the air intake and air-liquid ratio (ALR) compare to other geometrical parameters, air orifice (Da) and volume of mixing chamber (Vm). However, in the increase of Venturi throat diameter, air orifice diameter and mixing chamber height (Hm) result showed in an increase of air intake flowrate and ALR about ten time higher than out design target. The result might cause from the limitation of Gas-liquid jet pump theory which can applicable for Venturi part only. Therefore, the second version of newly air induction nozzle named 3D air induction nozzles are observed. By modified the size of Venturi throat diameter, air orifice diameter and volume of mixing chamber we observed that the range of air intake flowrate and ALR are decreased to the target design valued which are varied from 0.061 to 0.2446 for air intake flowrate and 0.00006-0.00034 for ALR. Finally the amount of air inclusion inside the spray droplets are visible in this range of air intake flowrate and air-liquid ratio (ALR).
