ABSTRACT
The Effects of Group Art Therapy on Emotional Expression and Life Event Stress in Patients with Schizophrenia
Kim Si Hyun Dept. of Art Psychotherapy, Graduate School, Chosun University Directed by Prof. Kim, Seung-Hwan
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of group art therapy on emotional expression and life event stress in patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, the study is intended to be used as basic information to develop programs for healthy mental and satisfactory life in patients with schizophrenia. Considering that patients with schizophrenia are generally decreased in emotional and response intensity due to blunted emotion, emotional expression is very important. When genetically vulnerable people are exposed to stress situations, they may experience psychotic symptoms and reduce social functions. Thus, various psychologically social intervention is required. This study was conducted under the hypothesis that a group art therapy program may increase emotional expression and decrease life event stress in patients with schizophrenia. The experimental group and the control group were organized and the effect of the group art therapy program were compared by pretest and posttest. Patients who resided in a mental health center located in G City and a mental hospital located in N City and were diagnosed as schizophrenia by psychiatrists based on DSM-5 and were participated in the study. Of them, 20 patients who understood the purpose of the study and voluntarily consented to participation were selected. They were divided into the experimental group(n=10) and the control group(n=10). The program focused on the improvement of emotional expression and the decrease in life event stress. It was performed for 14 sessions, 90 minutes per session. The emotional expression level was examined by Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire developed by Gross & John(1995) and the life event stress level was tested by the scale developed by Lee, Yeong-Ho(1993) and modified and added by Seo, Myeong-Ah(2015). Data analysis was made by a SPSS 22.0 program. Shapiro-Wilk, x2-test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and repeated measured ANOVA were used to test the hypothesis of the effect of the group art therapy program. The results of the study were as follows. First, the group art therapy program had an effect on the improvement of emotional expression in patients with schizophrenia. Second, the group art therapy program had an effect on the decrease in life event stress in patients with schizophrenia. The results suggest that the group art therapy program had a positive effect on emotional expression and life event stress in patients with schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia showed satisfaction and their own emotional expression after completing their works during the group art therapy. Group members communicated by a tool of art and could learn to understand and consider others’ emotion. Although it is difficult to generalize the results of this study, the results confirm that the program is effective to improve emotional expression and decrease life event stress in patients with schizophrenia and can be used as therapeutic approach in the clinical field.
