Zombie genre is one of the fastest growing icon of pop culture after '00s. This phenomenon, so-called 'Zombie Renaissance', can be detected not only in cultural industries such as movie or publishing business, but in academia and whole society. Nowadays, many people even enjoy 'doing a zombie', in which people dress themselves up as a zombie and throw a zombie walk or festival. In this regard, it can be said that zombie genre is not consumed in a passive way anymore. Furthermore, zombie is now used as a tool for resistance. For example, in 'Occupy Wall Street' protest erupted in the U.S. 2011, many people dressed up as a zombie. Also in current zombie narrative, zombie is not anymore the absolute other or used as a metaphor of death or dead body, for it talks, thinks, and even loves. In this transition of image of zombie, zombie does not seem to be the symbol of torpor, or the voiceless anymore. Rather, now it seems to acquire subjectivity, being the subject of resistance. Focusing on the aforementioned appearance of 'new style of zombie', this study tried to closely examine the change of subjectivity of zombie. The specific research process was as follows. At first, through studying the history of narratives of zombie, zombie and aspect of subjectivity transition were analyzed. Second, the reason of popularity of zombie since ‘00s was studied in conjunction with social anxiety and social phobia. Third, with new style of zombie, which has new subjectivity and even humanity, the possibility of political resistance was analyzed. In this study, zombie was broken down into three categories: 'Voodoo zombie', 'Romero zombie', and 'millennial zombie', based on the transition of subjectivity. Additionally, the style of zombie, which could not be categorized with the abovementioned three types, was designated as ‘post-millennial zombie'. Descartes developed a philosophical speculation on the thesis that all thing could be doubtful except for myself who could 'think', saying "I doubt, therefor I think; I think therefore I am". This thesis rated as the overturn of God-centered philosophy in the medieval times, and from it human being became the ‘cogito’ subject, attaining apriority and universality. Logically, however, the philosophical perspective in which only one's oneself is regarded as universal, relegates others to non-universal existence. This point of view towards others was materialized in the description of zombie in Haiti voodoo and Voodoo zombie narratives from 1930s to 1960s. This type of zombie is alive, and more similar to slaves rather than monsters, especially slaves in the colonial era. Nietzsche and French philosophers such as Foucault criticized the modern subject established by Descartes. At first, Nietzsche critically regarded the modern subject as an incomplete modify of God-centered philosophy declaring 'the death of God'. Foucault, taking a step forward, declared 'the death of Man' deconstructing human who once acquired subjectivity. This point of view could be linked with criticism of 'humanism' and 'humanity', both of which had its base on Descartes' concept of modern subject. In the Romero' film, produced 2 years after Foucault' declaration, the death of human subject could be seen. Absorbed in cannibalism, Romero zombie shows us the end of humanism and the epitome of anti-modern subject. Despite those criticisms on modern subject and contention that new form of subject should be arranged, contemporary philosophers seem to fail in coming up with a detailed alternative. In addition, deterioration of the international situation, terrorism, and growth of global pandemic and natural disaster have been threatening anthropocene, resulting in intensification of fear for apocalypse. Simultaneously, development of scientific technology shook the perception of human-being into its very foundation, while neoliberalism, where logic of capitalism rules everything, brought down a man's worth. Therefore, the description of millennial zombie narratives, the third type of zombie that appeared under those circumstances, tends to be more destructive. It also presents the zombie whose monstrosity is maximized, in portrait of world collapse or in reproducing the 'death of subject' much deeply. In this study, the new subjectivity was proposed based on Spinoza’s philosophy, that is to say, posthuman subject and multitude subject. In posthumanism, others and non-biological being, excluded in the course of discussion of subjectivity before, becomes an object of attention, and this is the essential of new subject. Monistic posthuman subject disagrees with dualism, pursuing coexistence with a being who has been discounted. On the other hand, nomadic posthuman subject does not assume a single and enormous center, but molecular and escaping subjectivity. Especially, multitude subject of Negri and Heart is much more political since it takes the emerging working class, i.e. a multitude, as the core of discussion. A multitude is a ‘competence’ which can stand against an oppressive authority, and is both the network and the manifold which cannot be reducted into single identity. In this context, post-millennial zombie is now reproducing the posthuman and multitude subjectivity in both reality and narrative. As mentioned, in ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest broken out in 2011, many people denounced the Wall Street’s moral laxity and neoliberalism, pointed out as the cause of international financial crisis and the polarization, in the costume of zombie. Negri assessed this phenomenon as the case in which nomadic protest became sedentary one, and as the protest of the multitude which had the form of network and experimented the new democracy. Post-millennial zombie materialized in narrative is not confined to a portrayal of apocalypse. Instead, it talks about an alternative for the world, setting zombie as the subject for coexistence. Zombie is now a being who has positivity and subjectivity. At last, Post-millennial zombie brings up a question that zombie has been the other unreasonably marginalized so far, and is a being that has its own right.
