Currently, the literature appreciation education at school is non-critical and uniform. In order to surmount such a limit of the literature appreciation education at school, this study was aimed at developing an effective literature appreciation pedagogics by applying the story-telling technique conducive to learners' active and subjective expression of their thoughts.
Story-telling is not simply ‘telling an episode' but a process of delivering and accommodating a message shared between speaker and audience. Since the story-telling is a dynamic and life-full activity that helps to express one's own life and thoughts as well as the message delivered, it is deemed as an appropriate tool for the literature appreciation.
Hence, the story-telling technique was applied to suggest a teaching-learning model for appreciation of Lee Sang's ‘Mirror' featured in the high school literature textbook; Lee Sang was a pioneer of the modernism poems in 1930s, but his poems are too difficult to be taught in the classroom. Therefore, the teaching-learning model suggested by this study may well be an effective literature appreciation pedagogics for Lee Sang's poems.
The story-telling teaching-learning model consists of 3 stages: stage of introduction (having interest in poems), stage of development (reciting of the poems, understanding of the knowledge about poems, sharing of the appreciation experiences), and stage of conclusion (concluding the meaning of the poems). At the stage of introduction, the learners can be motivated to review such story-telling materials related to Lee Sang's life as photos, pictures, and episodes and thereby, trace back to his thoughts decades ago and find the stories hidden in his poems. At the stage of development, a story is presented starting from the one about the literature history regarding the period when ‘Mirror' was written, and then, be developed, focusing on the episodes (love, disease, family and historical background). Thus, learners can check how their thoughts about the entire story or Lee Sang's life would be associated with the literary work, while being aware of the motive of its creation, method of expression, and symbolic meaning of the poetic words. At the stage of conclusion, learners share their appreciation of the poem ‘Mirror' with others, and conclude their appreciation by interpreting the poem through dialogue with other learns from diverse perspectives.
The pedagogics developed by this study is deemed very useful because it encourages learners to tell about the difficult-to-understand poem by associating their own life with the poet's one. The result would be learners' enhanced interest and active participation in the literature class. Furthermore, learners will be subjects of the class, expressing their thoughts freely and further, solve the problems through positive interaction with other learners. Accordingly, for the success of the pedagogics on the modern poems applying the story-telling technique, it is deemed important not to let the learners remain passive in the process of appreciating the poems but to encourage them to respond actively to them. Then, the learners will appreciate the poems subjectively and voluntarily only to enrich their imagination and internalize their literature experiences, and become not passive accommodators but active interpreters.
