Art, which has been recognized its value by the periodical demand of social members who are proceeding with living in the same era, is containing the past, the present and future. A genre of art was extended even to diverse design fields such as furniture, architecture, crafts, movie, dance, sculpture and fashion as well as painting. Especially, fashion has been newly re-analyzed and developed with borrowing painting artists' artistic ideology and expressive technique as a motive from the past up to the present. Accordingly, art trend and fashion design are having the same flow as a mutually convergent form, not an independent form, and are continuously creating a new aesthetic trend of being needed by society of today. Especially, ‘De Stijl,’ which was recognized as the most influential art trend along with the full-out opening of scientific and industrial era in the 20th century, was the art movement that visually reflects periodical image, which had required mechanical and practical design. De Stijl, which implies 'The Style' in Dutch, is the geometric abstract art movement that appeared at the same time all over Europe centering on the Netherlands in the early 20th century. The objective of De Stijl was to form a logical and objective screen through combining the purest formative elements like dot, line and surface escaping from the past painting composition method that had realistically revived the object based on neo-plasticism created by them. Moreover, this was gradually extended its influence up to the furniture and architecture in the rational and practical aspect. With entering the 1960s, it was integrated into fashion in earnest by designer Yves Saint Laurent. Following this, the De Stijl style is being continuously connected as a Color Blocking technique in collection by a majority of fashion designers at home and abroad even until now. As the fashion design applying a Color Blocking technique is a modern aspect based on using the moderate color and the geometric surface segmentation in clothing composition, it is solidifying the firm position as a new fashion trend owing to be recognized formative aesthetic value. However, a domestically previous research on De Stijl is recently existed just a single research on painting, architecture, ceramics, photograph and textile by Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld. A single thesis on Color Blocking has not existed yet. It is the real situation of being insufficient in an academic analysis and a work research on fashion design in terms of Color Blocking applying the formativeness of De Stijl. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to consider aesthetic characteristic that the formativeness of De Stijl has, and finally to develop a color-blocking fashion design work applying this. A theoretical consideration was inquired into a concept of De Stijl, neo-plasticism and Theosophy and was examined the background of formation. Also, as the major artists of the De Stijl movement, the works by Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld were analyzed by year. As for a case analysis of fashion, a scope of research was limited up to F/W season in 2016 that is the latest, from S/S season in 2010 when Color Blocking began to emerge as a fashion trend in earnest. Through analyzing 4 fashion collections in this period, a characteristic of fashion design, which was applied the formativeness and the Color Blocking in De Stijl, was utilized as a motive of developing design. In consequence of the case analysis, a formative characteristic of De Stijl was elicited largely with 3 kinds such as Color Blocking applying color moderation, Color Blocking applying grid, and Color Blocking applying geometric surface segmentation. Based on the above characteristic analysis, 6 pairs of the practical and trendy color-blocking women's clothing were manufactured. First of all, work Ⅰ and work Ⅱ correspond to a Color Blocking work applying color moderation and were suggested the sensual Color Blocking look by selecting dominant color among the three primary colors in De Stijl and by applying the oblique partition in elementarism asserted by Theo van Doesburg, who is a representative artist of De Stijl, to design. Work Ⅲ and work Ⅳ correspond to a Color Blocking work applying grid and completed the casual and modern look by mutually blocking fabrics, which positively reflected horizontal and vertical structure of neo-plasticism in De Stijl, and by sensitively arranging the diversified color fabrics. Finally, work Ⅴ and Ⅵ correspond to a Color Blocking work applying geometric surface segmentation and expressed the minimal and originative Color Blocking look through the unbalanced color-surface segmentation and through lots of fabric blocking such as wool, artificial leather, and artificial suede. Through this study, connecting the formativeness of De Stijl led to having re-analyzed the pure abstract element as trendy and practical fashion design such as the vertical and horizontal grid structure, which is the formative principle peculiar to De Stijl, the moderate color use of the three primary colors and the three achromatic colors, and the geometric & asymmetric surface segmentation. It is desired to be continuously helpful for a research on De Stijl and for the development in Color Blocking fashion design. In addition to this, a follow-up research is expected to be carried out on the Color Blocking look through a more diversified and originative expression method.
