Gugak, unlike Western music, is a type of music unique to Korea. However, pansori or gugak performances have been made in multi-purpose halls or concert halls based on Western music and the need to build a performance hall appropriate for gugak performance has steadily been indicated. While gugak performance halls have been build in the Metropolitan area and other regions since 1990, they cause lots of complaints both because of the failure to reflect the acoustic characteristics of gugak performance halls fully and because of the serious lack of data concerning space elements and acoustic performance. From this perspective, this study investigated six gugak performance halls in five domestic areas to identify their spatial characteristics and absorption elements. Then, field test was performed in the six performance halls to determine acoustic performance of each hall; on this basis, the acoustic characteristics were analyzed according to acoustic performance parameters. The results of this study are as follows:
1. As for the visibility range of the six gugak performance halls, Yejidang and Dongli Gugakdang in Case 1 (small-sized) are within B Zone appropriate for gugak performance. To this contrary, Yeonacdang and Jinacdang in Case 2 (medium-sized) and the first and second floors of Yeonacdang and Yeakdang in Case 3 (large-sized) contain C Zone; therefore, it is necessary to restrict the seats for the audience in C Zone in pursuit of good gugak performance appreciation.
2. Proscenium arches in ten domestic gugak performance halls, which are 14.1 m in width, 7.1 m in height, and 101.9 m2 in area on average, are slightly smaller than multi-purpose halls. As for the composition ratio of the finished materials, the walls form a larger portion than the floors and the ceiling: the wall ratio is 66.9% for the stage and 37.1% for the audience. Therefore, the type and absorption coefficient of finished materials for the walls are expected to have a great impact on acoustic performance.
3. In the six gugak performance halls, diverse finished materials are used on the floor for the audience but installment of seats increases absorption coefficient with higher frequency; the ceiling serves to push sound energy from the stage to the audience and has low absorption coefficient in larger parts containing reflective materials. The walls, which require all of such characteristics as reflectivity, diffusion, and absorption, have lower absorption coefficient with larger area and have a wider range of variation in absorption coefficient with smaller area.
4. In the six gugak performance halls, the sound pressure level (SPL) was 53.7-68.8 dB on every frequency band and a weighted sound level (SPL(A)) was 63.3-70.7 dB(A). SPL in Western performance halls requires deviation of ≤±3 dB for the entire audience at 500 Hz and all of the six gugak performance halls meet this criterion, making it possible to appreciate every type of performance with a fixed sound volume in the audience.
5. In the six gugak performance halls, reverberation time (RT) was 0.62-1.85 sec on every frequency band, the bass ratio (BR) was 1.22-1.55, and early decay time (EDT) was 0.51-2.40 sec, showing a reverberation characteristic of "movie theaters to ≤lecture halls" among Western performance halls, and BR ≥1.2 gives a sense of very warm timbre. As for the differences in EDT and RT on the basis of 500 Hz, the other five gugak performance halls than Yeakdang, which are characterized by relatively short EDT, can provide better sound definition through improvement in early sound within a hall, whereas Yeakdang characterized by relatively long EDT with the shortest difference of 0.02 sec can give weak early sound, thus mixing sounds.
6. In the six gugak performance halls, D50 definition was 37.5-80.4% on every frequency band. D50 definition of 55-60% is suggested for plays or lectures in Western multi-purpose halls at 500 Hz and is 56-72.3% in all of the six gugak performance halls, which meet the criterion. RASTI was 63.1-72.3%, which meets the criterion of "Good" for Western performance halls, and vocal information based on narratives, sound, aniri, and rejoinders of pansori is very definitely delivered without distortion or lower intelligibility.
