In this paper, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the pipe for fire protection. Since the conduction equation of pipe was coupled with the natural convection of water, the analysis of conjugate heat transfer was conducted. A commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on SIMPLE-type algorithm was used for investigating the unsteady flows and temperature distributions in water region. In the second chapter, the previous study which is relevant to finding an optimal position of electrical heat trace of steel pipe is summarized. In the third chapter, a numerical experiment was conducted to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the CPVC pipe for fire protection. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved. From the present numerical experiment, it has been found that the vector field of water inside the PVC pipe is opposite to the case of steel because of the huge difference of material properties of the two pipes. Furthermore, it was found that the lowest part of the pipe was an optimal position for electrical heat trace since the minimum water temperature of the case was higher than those of the other cases. In the fourth chapter, the effect of material property of pipe on the conjugate heat transfer of a pipe containing water was investigated by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equations of water and pipe. Natural convection and conduction of water inside the pipe was coupled with the conduction of the pipe whose bottom was subject to uniform heat flux. From the present grid resolution and time-step independent solutions, it has been found that the water temperature inside the PVC pipe was higher than that inside the steel pipe because the temperature of PVC is higher than the steel due to the smaller heat capacity of PVC. The streamline patterns of the two cases due to the natural convection of water were found to be opposite because the thermal diffusivity of steel (PVC) is larger (smaller) than that of water such that steel (PVC) pipe is heated up faster (slower) than water. The distributions of the heat flux along the inside walls of steel/PVC were also examined in detail. In the fifth chapter, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the pipe for fire protection. This study considers convection of water near its density maximum. From the numerical experiments, the temperature profile, isotherms and the vector fields in water region were obtained. Furthermore, it was found that in a range of 273 ~ 277K, the highest part of the pipe cross-section was an optimal position of electrical heat trace since the minimum temperature of the water with the position. While at a temperature higher than 277K, the lowest part of the pipe cross-section was an optimal position. Lastly, the effects of the straight and twisted installations of electrical heat trace on anti-freeze of water inside the pipe were numerically examined. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to compare the two installation methods. Since the heat conduction of pipe with heat source interacted with the natural convection of water, conjugate heat transfer was considered by using a commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on SIMPLE-type algorithm. From the numerical experiments, the isotherms and the vector fields in water region were investigated to extract the evolutions of minimum and maximum temperatures of water inside pipe. It was found that there is no substantial difference between the straight and twisted installations of electrical heat trace in terms of anti-freeze effect. Therefore, it can be concluded that the straight installation is recommended considering the damage and short circuit of electrical heat trace.
