D.I.Y.(Do It Yourself)가 제조업 중심의 산업에 있어서는 세계적인 관심을 받고 있다. Made in America (Today’s D.I.Y. Is Tomorrow’s 'Made in America)’라는 말과 함께 6월 18일을 만들기의 국경일(a National Day of Making)로 선언하며 미국의 제조 산업의 부활을 선포했다.

In consideration of recent international conditions, D.I.Y.(Do It Yourself) applied by Digital Fabrication based on ICT(Information Contents Technology)·Design Convergence is given world interest in the center of manufacturing industry. Particularly, in 2014, the President of the USA, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. hosted Maker Faire at the White House and said, “Today’s D.I.Y. Is Tomorrow’s 'Made in America.” He announced June 18th as a National Day of Making and declared the restoration of U.S. manufacturing industry. Behind this trend, there exist various backgrounds, such as expansion of sharing economy concept through open-source and dispersion of technology-based DIY movement like Maker Movement. In 2004, Chris Anderson introduce ‘Long Tail effect,’ and said that the market estimated 20% by Pareto Principle due to fast information spread through the Internet and development of logistics management technologies lately has become larger than before and had more economic significance. On the ground of Pareto Principle, off-line bookstores with limited space and resource can’t help establishing a strategy to focus on and display best sellers. They are in the condition that the other products go into the inventory which is hard to make sales. However, Chris Anderson said books not popular or record popular only for minority can make much profits through on-line effective sales and logistics. Even if this kind of economic phenomenon shows that personal tastes give rise to emotional consumption as much as economy-oriented consumption, this type of market has a problem that in respect of production, its existing production method of mass production without variety can’t secure profitability. However, due to diverse reasons such as cultural expansion of Sharing Economy(共有經濟) of sustainable development of Open Source concept, its Hardware expansion, outbreak(勃發) and dispersion of Open Fabrication Space as sharing space, home(自家) manufacturing of CNC(Computerized Numerical Control) devices through Open Source, and price decline and sustainable technology development for universal use, the possibility of small quantity batch production through 1-person manufacturing framework or Micro-Factory attracts more public attention. Furthermore, culturally, Maker Movement and its related Maker Faire are held to actively spread movements for technology-applied manufacturing and production internationally. Along with cultural movements above, as the necessity for spaces as cultural dispersion centers emerges, Open Fabrication Space targeting a large variety of goals and objects were born in various forms. However, as time goes by, while they have positive aspects to absorb and supplement advantages of the other Open Fabrication Space, there arose a difficult problem to clarify definite goals and characteristics of the Open Fabrication Space model. In the case of building up new Open Fabrication Space, it takes much time to investigate the essence and the components of space, equipments, and curriculum required according to the purposes. Basic frameworks are required to select elements according to uses in respect of building up equipment and space and to clarify the division of goals through classification focusing on Maker Culture. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate a definite meaning of Maker and Open Fabrication Space by analyzing the definition of Maker and kinds and characteristics of Open Fabrication Space, establish basic standards through discovery and elicitation of Maker’s way of thinking based on Maker Culture, deduce elements to compose Open Fabrication Space, and finally suggest a fundamental framework for Open Fabrication Space.
