The development of molecular sensors for cations and anions has been a subject of intense research interest, because cations and anions play important roles in a wide range of environmental, clinical, chemical, and biological applications. Plus, colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors are excellent tools for detecting analytes due to their high sensitivity, good selectivity, high response speed, simple operation and the inexpensive equipment required. I report new fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors which exhibited selective and sensitive detection via significant fluorescence enhancement or showed a significant color change. Receptors were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies, IR, ESI-mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. First, NA-1 showed a selective colorimetric sensing ability for cobalt ion by changing color from colorless to pale violet in a near perfect aqueous solution, facilitating naked eye detection of Co3+ through the oxidation of Co2+ to Co3+. This phenomenon could be possibly explained by ligand-to-metal charge-transfer. Second, NA-2 has a selective colorimetric sensing ability for copper (II) ion by changing color from colorless to yellow in aqueous solution, and exhibited both a color change from colorless to yellow and fluorescence enhancement with a red shift upon addition to F- in DMSO. Last of all, NA-3 showed exclusive response toward cyanide by a color change in aqueous solution. However, in aprotic solvents and methanol, the unique selectivity of NA-3 for CN- disappeared, and its nonselective color change was observed for other anions. This phenomenon could be possibly explained by the combination of the basicity and the hydrogen bonding ability of the anions.
