The research investigated the spatial characteristics of the impacts of environmental factors on the environmental diseases: Atopic dermatitis, allergy rhinitis, and asthma. For this purpose, this research mapped the spatial distribution of environmental disease, explored the spatial cluster of the disease, and found the hot spots and the cold spots through the analyses by the data of 2003, 2008, and 2013. This shows the need to understand the environmental disease by the lens of health geography. Furthermore, the research contributed to highlight the relationship between the environmental disease and the regional environmental factors such as the prevalence rate of environmental disease, temperature, humidity, precipitation, and air pollution substance.
First of all, this research visualized the spatial distribution and spatial cluster of the environmental diseases and other environmental factors such as the find air pollution substance, carbon monoxide, humidity, precipitation and other factors. Using the spatial database of the Korean government, this research shows the spatial cluster of Atopic dermatitis, allergy rhinitis, and asthma through global and local Moran's I index. This indicates the distribution of the diseases are spatially clustered together. Beyond the spatial cluster, this study also sought to find the relationship between the environmental factors and the environmental diseases. The findings of this research are as follows.
Firstly, Atopic dermatitis was suggestively and spatially effected by ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water supply ratio during the whole period. Among them, ozone had a negative effect on Atopic dermatitis, while nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, water supply ratio had a positive effect on Atopic dermatitis. In 2003, fine dust, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, water supply ratio had a statistically significant positive correlation with Atopic dermatitis, while mean annual precipitation and ozone had a negative correlation with Atopic dermatitis. In 2008, mean annual precipitation, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water supply ratio had a statistically significant positive correlation on Atopic dermatitis, while ozone had a negative correlation. In 2013, Atopic dermatitis was effected by the average relative humidity, mean annual precipitation, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, water supply ratio. On the other hand, the average temperature for the year, fine dust, and ozone had a negative correlation with Atopic dermatitis. Secondly, Atopic dermatitis was coherently effected by water supply ratio. The value of water supply ratio can explain statistically its relation with Atopic dermatitis. In 2003, the average temperature for the year, mean annual precipitation, ozone, and water supply ratio also had a statistically noteworthy influence on Atopic dermatitis. Among them, the average temperature for the year and water supply ratio had a positive impact on Atopic dermatitis, while the mean annual precipitation and ozone had a negative impact on it. In 2008, the average relative humidity, ozone, water supply ratio had a statistically significant impact of Atopic dermatitis. In 2013, the average relative humidity, fine dust, nitrogen dioxide, and water supply ratio had a statistically significant impact on the disease Thirdly, during the whole research period, allergy rhinitis average was provoked by the temperature for the year, nitrogen dioxide, water supply ratio. In 2003, the average temperature for the year, fine dust, nitrogen dioxide, and water supply ratio had an statistically significant correlation with allergy rhinitis, while average relative humidity and ozone had a negative correlation with allergy rhinitis. This research contributed to scrutinize the relationship between the environmental diseases and the environmental factors and to show the advantages of the lens of health geography. Among many topics around the health geography, the environmental disease is, like its name, an appropriate object of geographic research. Through this research, Atopic dermatitis is found to have a plausible relationship with water supply and humidity. More research would be necessary in order to observe the relationship between water and Atopic dermatitis.
