The purpose of this thesis is to provide a literary and technical analysis of the Piano Sonata, Op. 1 composed by Henri Paul Julien Dutilleux (1916–2013). Piano Sonata, Op. 1 incorporates his traditional and modern elements in various sources of inspiration. Dutilleux astonishingly merges the eclectic and transitional characteristics in the Piano Sonata, Op. 1 by examining its transitional aspect through comparison with pre- and post- works. By adding the suggestions regarding interpretations from a performer’s perspective, the thesis will contribute to the performer’s understanding of the Sonata and enhance its value as one of the finest of the 20th- century piano repertoire.
Prior to analyzing Dutilleux’s composition, examining the stylistic characteristics of the 20th- century French music and the historical context will be examined help understand the musical ideology of the Piano Sonata, Op. 1. For Dutilleux to develop his style, he incorporated various compositional methods while remaining in the flow of Impressionism. In other words, he kept the traditional aspects of classical music while compromising with other compositional methods of his contemporary composers, which resulted in achieving recognition as an independent composer by creating his own field that does not belong to one category. Moreover, various sources of inspiration, such as the visual arts, works of literature, and resonance, were injected into his music effectively. Dutilleux composed his music with his unique musical language without being swayed by the leading experimentalist composers, Olivier Messiaen (1908–1992) and Pierre Boulez (1925–2016), in the late 1950s.
The core of this study, Dutilleux’s Piano Sonata, Op. 1, is a transitional piece, that Dutilleux wrote while he was searching for his musical style. By selecting his suite Au gré des ondes, the composition made before the Sonata, and the 3 Préludes, the composition made after the Sonata, their musical styles will be compared. Additionally, how the sources of inspiration of these three pieces will be thoroughly examined to analyze the development progress. His early work, the Au gré des ondes, does not deviate much from the traditional form, and the performer may sense a strong feeling of Impressionism. The similarity between the Piano Sonata, Op. 1 and Au gré des ondes is in the use of bass sonorities to denote structural events. The characteristics shown in the Suite are the writing methods Dutilleux preferred and also appear frequently in the Sonata. Such writing methods became the basis of his compositional techniques and the most essential elements he pursued. His later work, 3 Préludes, breaks out the traditional form and fully demonstrates his idea and purpose of resonance, which he had attempted for a long time. Moreover, his intention of the regarding visual aspects and works of literature were all applied to the Preludes, which is to be discovered through the literary analysis and study.
Dutilleux’s Piano Sonata, Op. 1 is a transitional piece that has been chosen to find his musical language, and the analysis of the Sonata will discover the various elements that he has attempted to employ. The structure is in the traditional form, while the harmonic language combines traditional and modern elements; moreover, the organization of the piece is very rich and grand, unlike his other works. Furthermore, by examining the frequent virtuosic passages, the visual score through various writing methods, as well as attempts at resonance through the analysis, the development process of his writing methods in Suite and Prelude is revealed. In particular, the third movement employs his attempt to realize Proust’s concept of memory through the “progressive growth” in his music with the transformation of pitch, rhythm of the theme, inversion of melody, etc. in the variations.
Through his representative piano work, Piano Sonata Op. 1, his unique style, such as the musical language that encompasses traditional and modern, and the incorporation of the sources of inspiration in his music, will be recognized. In addition, through the suggestion from a performer’s perspective to express the Sonata effectively, the understanding of the piece will be increased, while its value as in the performance repertoire as well as its status in the 20th- century modern piano music will be confirmed. Examination of the use of form, rhythm, harmony, keyboard layout, and texture in each of Dutilleux’s solo piano works is discussed as well and observations of the development of Dutilleux’s compositional style in the solo piano genre are made. Additional biographical information is presented along with brief historical information regarding the composition of each of the aforementioned works.
