Differently from the past when limited marketing has been mainly used in premium products, the scope of limited marketing is recently extended to the diverse industries. Accordingly, enterprises take advantage of limited edition as one of the marketing strategies and enhance their brand value, image and loyalty toward the brand. Even though limited marketing is actively led by enterprises in various industries, especially fashion industries, there is little research about behavior of consumers who purchase limited edition fashion products.
The purposes of this study are (1) to identify characteristics of limited fashion consumers, (2) to analyze their purchase decision-making process, (3) and to examine negative factors of consumers’ recognition toward limited edition. For these purposes, qualitative investigation was conducted by doing in-depth interview with selected 11 consumers in their twenties and thirties who have actively purchased and consumed limited edition fashion products. The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
Firstly, it is examined that there are four sub-categories of limited edition fashion consumers’ characteristics: appearance management activity, acceptance of fashion trend, information-seeking behavior and hedonic shopping orientation.
Secondly, purchase decision-making process of limited edition fashion consumers are identified as seven steps, including need recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, planning and courtship, purchase, post-purchase evaluation, post-purchase behavior. When compared to the general purchase decision-making process, courtship/attachment formation and post-purchase behavior are unique features. As to need recognition, six sub-categories of buying motivations are inspected: scarcity, curiosity, conformity, yearning for the celebrities, souvenir and aesthetic value. As to information search, consumers acquire information and knowledge through diverse information sources, including marketer-controlled sources, experiential sources and personal sources. As to evaluation of alternatives, five evaluation criteria of consumers are identified: aesthetic value, self-presentation, product quality, symbolism and price. As to planning and courtship, consumers add special meaning and form a strong attachment to desired objects. As to purchase behavior, most consumers purchase the desired products according to specific buying plans. As to post-purchase evaluation, consumers improve their self-esteem and mood by wearing and displaying fashion objects, improve their loyalty and involvement toward the brand and evaluate the repurchase intention. At the final step, consumers boast about their buying experiences by displaying on SNS or verbal delivery, manage their products, and display limited editions in their display cabinet.
Third, in order to suggest several improvement plans for enterprises using limited edition marketing, this study identified negative factors of consumers’ recognition toward limited edition. Four sub-categories are examined: outrageous price, tricks of company, fatigue due to purchasing competition and re-sellers.
