The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how to analyze double object constructions and dative constructions with traditional concepts. There were many alternative methods to analyze double object constructions and dative constructions. This paper focuses on analyzing these constructions with concepts very well-known to us, not linguistic approaches which people think are very difficult to understand or accept. There are two issues in this. First, the two constructions have two complements such as direct object and indirect object. They are all complements, so verb needs them. There are three ways to solve this problem. First way is the two complements and the verb merge all together. However, according to Huddleston(1984) , we can get traditional definition about each objects. Whereas direct objects have immediate relation with a verb, indirect objects have mediate relation with a verb. That is, a verb must merge with direct objects first, and then merge with indirect objects. Second way is that the verb merges with indirect objects and then merges with direct objects. The order of direct objects is followed by indirect objects in double object constructions, however. So, this assertion has also problem. Third way is that the verb merges with direct objects and then merges with indirect objects. This opinion is in concordance with Huddleston(1984)’s argument. Thus, this paper accepted his argument and analyzed two constructions. The other issue is whether there is a similarity or not between two constructions. It is found that there is a disagreement about this among many scholars. However, this dissertation accepted Larson(1988)’s opinion that double object constructions can be derived from dative constructions through dative-shift process because of economic efficiency. Therefore, this paper analyzed double objections and dative constructions with the same analytical framework. In addition to this, this thesis confirmed the similarity between dative constructions and locative constructions. On this account this paper analyzed the three constructions with the same analytical framework and it is considered that this way can contribute to the economic efficiency. In addition, this thesis found the need to introduce some functional categories such as vp-shell theory(by Larson(1988), VoiceP(by Marantz(1993), ApplP(by Pklkänen(2002), and PHAVE(by Hallman(2015). Therefore, this monograph analyzed the two constructions with these functional categories. Also, it is found that the possibility that double object constructions will be the part of universal grammar in that the expression like ‘I gave a book John’ is possible in some of United Kingdom’s dialects. In sum, our traditional concepts can help us to analyze the two constructions or even three constructions.
