From the ancient time, China has continued the cultural exchanges of the West through the silk road. The cultural exchanges have been severed since the late 16th century Ming Dynasty as China has not exchanged with the outside due to its national isolation policy. In the 17th century, Qing Dynasty opened its doors to the West due to the defeat of the Opium War and began accepting western culture. Then China's traditional costume contacted with the western costume and the Chinese modern women's clothe Qipao and Chinese modern men's clothe Mao suit appeared. Sun Wen(孫文, 1866~1925), the first generalissimo of Provisional Government of China, abolished the feudal apparel system and designed Mao suit(中山服) that combined the Chinese traditional costume to the Western male clothing. After that, Mao suit was widely worn among Chinese people of all ages as the representative clothing that can be recorded in China's modern history until China expands the open-door policy in 1978. After the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Mao suit began to be applied to clothing design in the world fashion stage. The purpose of this study is to analyse the significance of the costume history by analysing the occurrence and evolution of Mao suit that occupied an important position in the modern costume history of China and to provide a source of design inspiration to contemporary fashion designers through the case analysis of the Mao suit. To that end, literature review and case studies was conducted in parallel. For the literature review, changes in each age in terms of Mao suit were investigated with reference to the related documents, Chinese costume history and cultural history, prior research papers and internet resources. The case analysis was qualitatively done focusing on the silhouette, color and detail of collection clothes. The scope of the study was from 1912 to 2000 when Mao suit appeared. The case analysis of the Mao suit applied to the modern fashion was made on the applications centered around ‘London Collection’, ‘New York Collection’, ‘Paris Collection’ and ‘Chinese Fashion Week’ from 2008 to 2015. The reason for selecting the time range of case studies as from 2008 to 2015 is that Chinese design appeared on the world fashion stage. The results found that Mao suit changed into many different forms after Sun Wen designed it for the first time in 1912. This study suited at the changes by dividing it into Phase 1(1912-1927), Phase 2(1928-1965), Phase 3(1966-1977), and Phase 4(1978-2000) with historical, and political events and conformational changes in Mao suit. First, Phase 1 features the basic costume configuration of a standing band collar, three inside pockets, seven buttons and two pieces of sleeves. In Phase 2, eight-shaped(八字形) stand collar, four outside flap pockets, five buttons and one piece of sleeve have been fixed as the basic. Entering Phase 3, Mao suit was worn for a variety of purposes, such as casual wears, uniforms, work clothes, etc. And changed into the a standing band collared one with four flap pockets inside, five buttons and one piece of sleeves. Mao suit in Phase 4 was worn in the form of a standing ban collar, eight-shaped stand collar, three or four pockets, five or seven buttons and two pieces of sleeves. However, this shape disappeared gradually under the influence of the open-door policy of China. Currently, Mao suit is worn a men’s formal suit of China when Chinese politicians and celebrities attend international conferences. The modern menswear collection that have applied Mao suit used the neat and rustic style consisted of a jacket and pants without differences and was designed in a way of slightly varying in colors, materials and details. However, the womenswear collection appeared into a feminine style that has emphasized femininity with an one-piece dresses, a two-piece suit, ensemble, etc, into Masculine styled pants and a two-piece suit and into a casual style that added bright and variety colors and was lightly directed. The frequency analysis of the cases of the fashion collections using Mao suit from 2008 to 2015 showed an increased application of Mao suit to the western collection in New York, Paris and London in 2008 due to the impact of Beijing Olympics. However, from 2009 onwards, the frequency of the utilization of Mao suit was higher in the Chinese Fashion Week and the New York Collection. This cause is explained by the fact that almost of the designers who took advantage of Mao suit in the New York Collection are American Chinese. In particular, the New York collection that has showed a high frequency of the use of Mao suit is a fashion collection held in the United States, exhibiting a good political, economic relation between the United States and China. It suggests that especially at a time when the brands of the world enter into China, American fashion designers also could not be overlook Chinese as a giant fashion market. In the case of China, Chinese politicians have worn Mao suit when attending international conferences. It also implies that Chinese fashion designers have introduced their own collections by adding contemporary design to the Mao suit, resulting in the gradually higher frequency. In terms of the costume history, Mao suit has been recognized as a representative men’s costume of modern China among many fashion designers of the world. As China's national strength and status increases on the world political and economical stage in the future, Mao suit seems to be more variously utilized and spot-lighted. This study is significant in that it has a source of a variety of design inspiration to fashion designers through case studies of the modern fashion of applying Mao suit.
