This study was conducted to develop a reasonable coagulant in response to the occurrence of harmful algal blooms due to climatic and environmental changes. Regardless of precipitation variations due to changed climate, we need to seek alternative methods for reusing limited freshwater resources to respond to severe droughts and water shortage situations. A effective coagulant developed for algae or nutrient removal is needed to satisfy humanity's freshwater needs.
Another purpose of the study was to develop new applications for unused limestone resources. Used and unused product of soft-burned dolomite are divided at approximately a 75:25 percent ratio, respectively. Most of the unused dolomite is usually disposed of mine restoration or landfill. It has been reported that the amount of unused dolomite waste reaches up to 25 million tons annually in China.
Hydrated dolomite kiln dust (H-DKD) and calcined-dolomite kiln dust (C-DKD) were prepared as coagulant agents for algae and phosphorus nutrients removal in raw algal solutions. Slaked lime was purchased to compare the performance of C-DKD and H-DKD samples under the same conditions. The visual color was changed from green to pale green with better transparency according to increases in the addition amount. The addition amounts of the hydrated lime, C-DKD, and H-DKD were given at 2.5g/L, 5g/L, and 10g/L in raw algal solution, respectively. The slaked lime appeared to be a visibly superior water clarity improvement treatment to C-DKD and H-DKD. However, the removal efficiency of chlorophyll a is similar when addition amounts of all of three samples reach 10g/L. The efficiency of the hydrated lime, H-DKD, and C-DKD was recorded at 78, 76, and 66% each across the progress of 8.5min coagulation and 20min precipitation process. UV-Vis absorbance spectra of chlorophyll a was recorded in raw algal solutions before and after the addition of the three samples. Especially, at ultraviolet range of 250-400nm, the chlorophyll a content added to the amounts of three samples was gradually decreased compared with the content in raw algal solution. The magnitude of UV absorbance according to the amounts added to the three samples corresponded to the concentration of residual chlorophyll a after the coagulation process. The concentration reduction of chlorophyll a strongly appeared as order of hydrated lime, H-DKD and C-DKD which is consistent with the results of the visible performance and removal efficiency of chlorophyll a. Meanwhile, CO2 gas commonly dissolves in the solution and is discharged from the algae through the photosynthesis reaction. Therefore, in the addition of a small amount (2.5g/L), calcium hydroxide in the three sample spontaneously convert to calcium carbonate with the CO2 gas reaction. This demonstrate that XRD peak intensity of the calcium hydroxide disappears but the peak intensity of calcium carbonate largely increases. The crystallinity of calcium hydroxide appears again as the added amount is increased to 5g/L and 10 g/L. In good agreement with the FT-IR and XRD results, it should be noted that the crystallinity of the calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate functional groups was significantly higher than magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate. H-DKD, especially, with the additional amount of 10 g/L, had a conversion ratio from magnesium hydroxide to magnesium carbonate that was only 0.3%. Finally, most of the crystallinity contents in C-DKD and H-DKD consisted of calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and magnesium hydroxide. Furthermore, it should be noted that the hydroxyl and carbonate groups contributed the most to the elevated removal efficiency of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus (T-P). The concentration of T-P was 1 mg/L and all of the samples showed excellent coagulant performance of T-P. The development of an algae coagulator using soft-burned dolomite can be viewed as a powerful technology which will open up new utilization methods and build a market for itself quickly.
