The beginning of this research is as follows. The growth of 20th-century Christianity in Korea is remarkable in the world church history. However, Koran christianity has reached a plateau or declining phase after 1990. About 0.6 million of Korean christian from 10 to 24 have left their church. There are several reasons why these christians including adolescents and adults are leaving their church. A great pressure to faith, secularization of Korean church, the problems of church leaders, and too formalized sermons are considered as major factors in Korean church's decline. The crisis of Korean church has been accelerated by the ways to deliver the message, which force them to follow it with the authority of preacher neglecting the life and conditions of the congregation and the way they receive the messages. In terms of form homiletics, this study is going to reveal the transitional aspects of the preach forms according to the period and the religious orders such as the holiness church, Presbyterian church, and the Methodist church. In addition, the model of sermon which can make the congregation be told and feel sympathy will be presented in the formal, developmental, and delivery aspects.
Although the form of preach is important, it has not been focused on and emphasized throughout the history of sermon. The introduction and concern about the form of preach have started to be emphasized since new homiletics movement. The professor Jeong Seong-gu in Presbyterian church stated the characteristics of the sermon, its contents, and the form centering on the pastors of early-Korean church through the Journal 'Shinhakiinam.‘ The professor Jeong In-gyo from the Holiness church mentioned the from of preaching through in 1994 and introduced diversity in it through in 2008. Since then, there has been the studies on the preaching form researched by several people. Until now, precedent studies on sermon history have been researched centered on period, accidents, characters, and the religious orders. To its regret, there was no comparative study on the form of sermon that the preachers belonging to Presbyterian church, Methodist church, and the Holiness church deliver over time.
This study will improve the contents that the researchers stated above dealt with or did not research according to the period based on the Holiness church, Presbyterian church, and the Methodist church. Also, the major pastors that represent each religious order were selected and the features and forms of their sermons would be researched and compared.
In chapter 2, it is related to Form Homiletics. First, the understanding to the preaching form and the importance of the form of sermon are explained. Secondly, the transition of the sermon form in the sermon history is stated according to the period dividing Old church, Medieval church, the Reformation ages, and Modern ages.
In chapter 3, the situation of the religious orders and the feature of sermon are mentioned in the beginning period of Korean church(1907~1945). Especially, historical situation including the Holiness church, Presbyterian church, and Methodist church and the features of sermon in each religious body are examined.
Secondly, the sermons of the representative preachers are analyzed. The structure, development, and delivery of preaching of famous pastors such as Lee Myeong-Jik from the Holiness church, Gil Seon-Ju from Presbyterian church, and Yang Ju-Sam from Methodist church, are analyzed. Third, it is researched whether three pastors preached using the same text and what kind of the preaching form they used with that same text. If each form is different, the difference between those ways to develop the sermon would be studied.
In chapter 4, from the liberation to retrieving Korean war(1945~1965), the situation of religious orders and the features of preaching are researched. In this part, what kind of the sermon form the preachers in the Holiness church, Presbyterian church, and Methodist church used is usually searched. Secondly, in the sermons of the representative preachers, the structure, the development, and the delivery of preaching which the representative pastors including Lee Seong-bong from the Holiness church, Han Gyeong-Jik from Presbyterian church, and Park Yong-ik from the Methodist church employed, are analyzed. Third, the form of preaching and the ways to develop preaching are compared with other religious order's.
