(Abstract)
The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of Tarot-based Group Counselling on self-determination of high school students.
The objects of this study consists of 40 volunteer highschool students from D highschool in Busan. The group of the participants includes each grader from the first to the third ones. This study divideds them randomly into two groups: One group contains twenty students who have experienced Tarot-based group counselling, the other one, referred to 'Controled Group' was made of the other twenty students who have not experienced Tarot-based group counselling. The tool used for this study is Basic Psychological Need Scale : BPNS which was produced by Ryan and Deci(2002), revised for Korean students by Myung-hee Lee(2008). It consists of 18 questions of self-determination. 6 questions measure autonomy factors about self-determination, another 6 questions measure competence factors about self-determination and the other 6 questions measure relatedness factors about self-determination. This study has identified the homogeneity of test group and controlled group through T-test, Repeated Measure ANOVA and T-test find out the effects of the Tarot-based group counselling.
The result of this study showed that the test group who were participated in the Tarot-based group counselling had a significant difference in improvement of autonomy factors, competence factors and relatedness factors about self-determination. The positive change worked significantly in the following order; autonomy factors, relatedness factors and competence factors about self-determination.
Some suggestions for further studies are as follows. First, because this program was applied only to high school students in B city, it is a little inappropriate to be generalized for all teenagers. To develop a reliability, it is necessary to expand age groups and gender groups, including male highschool students and it should be studied in larger areas. Second, this study tends to focus on analysing the effects of the Tarot -based group counselling on self-determination of high school students only in a quantitative way, so a qualitative analysis can be neglected in some way. To develop more accurate methods and steady study, it is crucial to analyse qualitatively as well as quantitatively. For more accurate tests of qualitative effects of the Tarot-based group counselling on self-determination of high school students, I think more various measurement tools like individual behavior observation record and report of each student's feeling are needed. Lastly, this study failed to identify the effectiveness of self-determination in various situation because this study tends toward limit the object to a certain group, highschool students. Besides, self-determination is not just restricted to school circumstances, it needs to develop further studies of counsel system intervention and the standard of measurement which can deal with self-determination in more general circumstances.
In conclusion, the Tarot-based groupl counselling was effective for the improvement of self-determination of high school students although it has some weakness like this. Besides, this study is meaningful because it verifies Tarot plays an important role as a psychological or emotional counsel kit as well as a simple prophecy kit for fun. This study also shows the potential of Tarot as an approach to a variety of negative motivation problems of each individual. It can be expected that continuous applying of the Tarot-based gorup counselling will solve many self-determination problems and will be effective for counsel treatment for adolescents.
