This study identified the need and importance of family support of families having children with severe brain lesions and further sought to establish the social welfare intervention practices and policies on the family support needs of impaired person with brain lesions. Through 25 places including special schools, regular schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do province and welfare center for handicapped, 446 questionnaires were distributed to the subject parents having children with severe brain lesions, 288 questionnaires were collected and 272 questionnaires of them were used for conducting analysis. The survey was carried out from July 1st 2015 until August 7th 2015. The key findings of the study are as follows. First, as a result of conducting difference verification to verify whether there were differences in parenting stress in accordance with the general characteristics of the parents, we found that differences in parenting stress were statistically significant depending on the average monthly income and also differences in family support needs in accordance with the general characteristics of the parents were statistically significant depending on the average monthly income. Second, as a result of conducting difference verification to verify whether there were differences in parenting stress in accordance with the general characteristics of the handicapped children, we found that differences in parenting stress were statistically significant depending on the severity of disability and school type. In terms of the severity of disability, the 1st grade showed higher parenting stress than the 3rd grade and in terms of school type, special schools showed higher parenting stress than regular class of regular schools. In addition, differences in parenting burden depending on the general characteristics of handicapped children were statistically significant in accordance with the severity of disability and the 1st grade showed higher parenting burden than the 3rd grade. Third, social perception toward children which was the lower dimension of parenting stress appeared to have positive effects on family support needs and as social awareness for children was higher, family supports needs became higher. Fourth, economic burden, social burden and future burden which were the lower dimension of parenting burdens appeared to have positive effects on family support needs and as economic burden, social burden and future burden were higher, family supports needs became higher. Based on the findings of the study, we can make the following proposals to make social welfare practical intervention. First, it is required to devise a policy as a preparation for the post-death of the parents having children with severe brain lesions. Second, it is required to promote support for training specialized personnel to take care of impaired person with severe brain lesions as to reflect disability specific characteristics of impaired person with brain lesions. Third, support for caring for children with severe brain lesions should be further expanded. Fourth, it is required to implement system to help self-reliance of impaired person with brain lesions. Fifth, detailed support plans for reducing economic burdens of the parents needs to be devised. Lastly, it is absolutely required to increase support assistant devices to households having children with severe brain lesions.
